| Brass Playing is not dying out, but the opportunities to play diminish greatly as you get older.
That was the main reason I play bass now. People would hear me in the practicing tuba in college and say hey that great. You play bass? No? SLAM!!
I was in high school, youth bands, drum corps, university marching/concert, Orchestra, pep, jazz, the whole nine - after you age out and get out of school, there is no where to play. Perhaps you are lucky enough to have a community band, but those are few, far between, and dying out. The arts are the first to get slammed when financial cuts must be made. SLAAM= So Long Arts And Music

| I play both the trombone and the trumpet. And I bring my old dented up trumpet to camps and stuff(along with my guitar) But in order to play with the guitars I have to play really quiet or bring my mute in order to not overpower the guitars.
I don't think that we're dying off. |

| sorry i didn't read all the threads, only the first page but they're right. and your right at the same time. our school is short on brass players but then again we're short on everything because we're sucha small school. i dont hink its that brass is dying out, i think band is dying out. i mean everyone in my school like played for like 2 weeks and quit. i on the other hand love band and have never experienced anything else like it. i have met my frist love there,(not crush but awsome, freindly love ) and i met my best freind and my "low brass bros" there too. i think people just dont understnad how much fun it is to give up on trying to be popular and just live for something and do it in all gods glory. sorry if this is a really long post but i have a lot to say on the subject. as for the whole brass thing i think that the saxs are taking over and i kind of agree with you. i used to play saxaphone but now i only play it for jazz. i play tuba (which is awsome) and baritone. i love the brass sound and i hope someone who reads this thread sees my post and decides to try band next year. thank you.

I'm kind of new here, but I've been playing trumpet for a LONG time (i.e. longer than most of you have been alive)
Good to see some brass players around here. |

| I'd say that brass is certainly not a dying breed. At the last high school I went to, we had a fairly large brass section in our band. And one of my best friends, who is 17, plays trumpet. I even considered taking up a brass instrument, but I don't have the resources or time at this point. I may later. I don't think we have anything to worry about. |

Good to see some brass players around here. | Yeah - this thread has been around longer than I've moderated this forum.
(actually, longer than I've even been a member of CGR.) Quote: |

You'll probably find the most brass and woodwind players in school (both highschool and college), as that is where they learn. Overall, people are more apt to pick up, say, a guitar, for for casual learning of an instrument than any brass (or traditional band instrument).

| I haven't read all the posts, but I'm a trumpet player, and I think that the problem isn't lack of brass players. I think it's a lack of brass players who actually care and are willing to play other times than just in schools and such.
