Ever heard of Drum and Bugle Corps? all that is is brass and percussion, I play Tuba and Baritone (euphonium) and many of my friends are brassists...Brass is not a dying breed (btw, for jazz/swing influence, look to Denver and the Mile High Orchestra...2 horns at once, baby!) and if u really think there should be more big band type stuff, then maybe you should consider forming a christian big band/swing/jazz group (we could use some more of those)

I love drum corps. It is a matter of who you associate with and someone mentioned this before, but we are on a message board for a guitar website...

i've seen denver live, twice... i'm a euphoniumist and a trumpeter, yet my favorite member of d&mho is the bassist...

anyway, i'd rather be in a small population of musicians (brass players) who are completely devoted than in a large population that really don't care that much (guitarists). well i'm in both so it doesn't matter i guess.

I find it amazing that Denver writes the music, arranges it for the band, knocks down some sweet trumpet solos, and sings! He's quite a talented individual. I have a lot of respect for him.

as an old brass player, at least by cgr standards, im 32.
yeah sure there are a lot of trumpet players and such at school, but not many continue after ya leave school.
i started when i was 13 and im coming on 20 years of playing, and 98% of that time i have played at church.
not many( if any) churches that i go to have brass players at all. guitar players are common.
but i notice in worship music, that the brass sound is coming back. ie planetshakers, hillsong, , not just ska.
if ya start an instrument when youre young, and you play it every week for a long time ,ppl appreciate you.
playing a trumpet for 2 3rds of my life has been awesome and given me many opportunities. the secret is to stick at it and not give up. not too hard at all.

Ha! Got you all beat in the aging trumpet player game (46). But there was never a church band till a couple years ago. The problem is I just don't have the range and endurance to play a lot, so my embochure turns to mush every Sunday . And having kids does really bad things to your abs.(Dogfood: Far Side cartoons ROCK!)

Trumpet

this is my 5th year of playing trumpet, and to me it's getting really really old. I'm sick of going to band classes and stuff. I'm even in the schools jazz program, but to me I'm just tired of playing. I just started taking piano lessons like a month ago, and I'm hoping to get an electric guitar for christmas. so I personally am sick of trumpet playing at the moment.

Brass instruments rock. It takes an atitude to play the trumpet or trombone that no other instrument has. I don't think that trumpet is dying out, though. At my high school, at which I'm a junior, we had 12 trumpets my freshman year, 11 last year, and then 27 this year. This is out of a school of about 850 people, so that's a bunch. I've noticed that a lot of the trumpets are beginning to settle for mediocre, though, instead of trying to excel. I have a feeling this has to do with my town and band director (who's a die-hard trumpet player) instead of any national trend. For example, despite having a ton-o-trumpets in marching band, which is required, this year, we still had a hard time finding a fifth trumpet for jazz band. This is my 7th year to be playing the trumpet and I learn to love it more every time I play it.

The Brass Player's Creed

Okay...put your right hand in the air...and repeat after me

I promise never to be discouraged by the popular music scene.

yeah...haha so guys. Just go out and find a way to make the music you want to make. If you play brass, woodwind, guitar or whatever just walk up to somebody and say: "you want to start a band?" or "Can I improvise to the worship music on my trombone this sunday" Just be courageous and go out there. There are tons of us brassists, just there needs to be more zeal if you want your instrument to be heard. God gave you this music talent, so use it and change the world!

i don't know...maybe it's just where i am living. i'm in redding california...yes, one of the old dixieland capitals of the states. now nobody even knows what dixieland is. i'm playing bass bone, tenor bone, trumpet, and soon tuba. you know what made me smile the other day? almost drove me to tears, too. in the new supertones album...they redid adonai...and mojo yells "THOSE ARE HORNS! THOSE ARE HORNS!" that made me smile. anyways, yeah, everybody in my region plays guitar. EVERYBODY. i'm one of probably 4 serious trombone players. nobody's serious about it in my region...it's kind of depressing. i really wish there were more bands out there that weren't afraid to use brass...in anything. AROUND HERE. sorry, i need to clarify that. around here, we rarely ever even see anything brass. i'm rambling on now. i want to jam now, too. hmm....
