Crisis in the US.... what now? In light of the unprecedented destruction in New York, Washington D.C., and Pennsylvania, I'm sure that everyone has mixed, but strong emotions toward this shocking situation, disbelief, sadness, and anger among them.
It is mind-boggling to comprehend the extent of this situation, the number of casualties, the widespread destruction, and the precise coordination of these attacks. Indeed, the whole nation of the US has reacted by evacuating federal buildings and other structures thought to be prone to another attack.
But people are also reacting vehemently to these attacks, demanding retribution and payback for the deaths and destruction done. In these forums alone, there are posts suggesting bombings on other countries to the point of war. These show anger against others, anger that is justified in this society.
However, this anger is not justified in God's eyes. He tells us to "love each other as I have loved you." (John 15:15) We must strive to show love toward everyone involved, including the attackers, and see them as people whom God created, people who Jesus loved.
You may be thinking, are we supposed to act like cowards and let this action go unpunished? Yes and no. As Christians, we should "hate what is evil and cling to what is good." (Romans 12:9) But this evil refers to the action and not the person committing it. So it is right to hate the evil involved in the attacks, but not to hate the people. Also, it is not our responsibility to make sure justice is served. "Vengeance is mine, says the Lord." It is not our place to judge.
So I implore all of you, especially those who are Christians, to seek God's guidance in this situation. I pray that people do not become overcome with anger and hatred, for it will consume them. Also, I hope that no prejudices influence your reactions, that you do not make assumptions without proof, instead, that you seek the truth. For this is not the time for America to unify as a country, but for the world to unify as human beings, and for Christians to unify as God's instruments.
Be strong and courageous, do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.
-Joshua 1:9
Pray always, not only in times of crisis.
