| Re: to rock or not to rock? Um, I don't see anything wrong with rock as a genre. Do you think it is the music that edifies or brings down or the words, because I would say generally the words are far more significant. They are what makes a song Christian or secular, after all.

| okay, luke, so what's your opinion on a song that has no words, by a secular artist?

| Well, if you read the secular worship thread, you'll see most of the people's views on secular music.
I would sum it up like this, if the music does NOT bring God glory, then it's wrong. Yes, I do believe some secular music can glorify God, considering the lifestyles of the artists and the lyrics of their music (ex. Lifehouse). I personally prefer Christian music, the style's irrelevant. I don't care how hard the rock is, if the artist is Christian, and their goal is to glorify God then it is good.
And if I know Luke, he'd say the same thing . |

| I find Beethoven wonderful for helping me get to sleep.
On a more serious note, my concern is definitely the glorification of God in all things, both in the artist and in you. But I'm not going to condemn all secular music because it can be used for God's glory.
A good standard is Romans 14:23 -- "Whatever does not come from faith is sin." What that means in English is that if it's not done with God in mind, in glad submission of God to glorify Him, it's sin.

| Chris Harbison,
Ok, so you are saying that ANY music that doesn't glorify God is wrong?
If we think along that line, then almost all classical music is wrong.
I agree with you that secular music can glorify God. When you say all music that doens't do this is wrong, it seems too broad a statement to me.

| Most of the classical composers were Christians, though.

| I said "most". I don't know about Mozart. But Bach, Beethoven, and Handel all (probably) were.

#11 | | Guest | ok im not even in on this site or anything i was just checking it out when i stubbled across this question...im into hardcore music (extol, zao, living sacrific,etc...) and at first my parents and i really had a hard battle about it untill i sat them down and really explained to them that there is a difference between passion and anger... i let them read the lyrics and such and its all settled... i dont listen to music that isnt glorifying to God.... i beleave my music is....the lyrics have a christ focus and bring glory and honor to him... the beat may be hard but hey thats awesome that there can be this type of music that honors God....some ppl say oh well the black nail polish and such or like the bands t-shirts always being black is a problem but i dont think so, there is usually a look to go along with the music if that black T is proclaiming christ then hey let em be...... there are so many teens that are "angry" and are turning to secular music for answers...this type of christian music can be a answer for them...a witness...anyways i dont even know if this all makes sense but i beleave that it can glorify God...

| Lori,
You hit the nail on the head. The type of music doesn't matter, as long as it is pleasing to God, there is nothing wrong with the type of music.
Also, you are so right when you say that teens are turning to secular music for answers, all you need to do is listen to Crawling by Linkin Park and there is no doubt left.
But even if music is secular, it can be used to reach people. Groups like U2 and even the Beatles wrote some things with lyrics that Christians can be proud of.
If we think about it, we can use anything to please God, even secuar music.

after reading this, i almost fell outta my chair laughing... but thats a whole 'nother story
