How do you read the text version of the Chords?

I picked up the guitar about 5 months ago. I love that this site allows you to look at the chords but the text written out ones are hard for me to understand. When they are the lines and dots I understand that the virtical lines are the stings and the horizontal lines are the frets. The text verson I can't really read so I was wondering if someone could explain it to me. thanks

Do you mean tablatures? Those are usally meant for lead and fill ins, like for the second and lead guitarist, they are single notes, played one at a time.I'm not the best one to explain it to you, Chesh might be able to tell you more about it.

If you mean something like

022100

Then that would be an E chord. The numbers represent what fret to play, and the place in the order represents the string going from Low E on the far left to high E on the far right (for example, the 1 means to hold the G string on the first fret).

the same goes for

0
2
2
1
0

It's just written a different way.

Then you have tabs, written such as:

E--0--------------------------------1-------
A--------------------------8----------------
D----------2--3-----------------------------
G-----------------------------------------8-
B--------------------4----------------------
e-----0----------------------------3--------

(don't actually try to play that as it would probably hurt your ears)

Again, the numbers mean what fret to play, and the lines represent the strings, going from low E on top to high e at the bottom. Play them in order that they appear.

I've probably confused you beyond belief, in which case this was a mission well accomplished. But I really do hope you understand what I'm trying to say.

Except that the vertical arrangements are backwards from anything I've ever used...I always put the low E on bottom and high E on top.

I don't think it matters. People just have different ways of doing it. I know a guitarist who tabs stuff with the high E on the bottom, and low E on top. I do it the other way.

Probably be a good idea to indicate which direction you're going in.

That's why you put the string names to the side. i.e.

e--------------------
B--------------------
G--------------------
D--------------------
A--------------------
E--------------------

vs

E--------------------
A--------------------
D--------------------
G--------------------
B--------------------
e--------------------

I just found that out a couple weeks ago, so you could say it's new for me too.
