An easy way to learn stum patterns it to learn about measures and beats. A measure usually is 4 beats so what you would do is count to 4 in your head over and over again in a steady pattern while your playing and strum down on every beat. After you do that start strumming up after you stum down so you will be strumming down up down up down up down up. Then you can start skipping strums so it would be like down up down down up down. Just start making your own patterns using this method.
One that I commonly use is down down up up down up.

As for the number of patterns...

As many as you can come up with. There are several ways of strumming one kind of music, butr they are all based on the timing and rhythm

Another more challenging strum after you get good at the basics is when possible strum down then pick the high E, B and sometimes G strings one at a time from bottme to top. The idea hear is I think to increase versatility, switching from strums to picking can be very handy. I pick about 1/3 of the time I play usually it's just random notes but it sounds great

Anyway

Just to piggyback....

Check out this forum's older threads (and even some of the more recent) and you'll find a lot of strumming questions that myself and others have tried to help answer. I know I've left some recordings that seemed to go over rather well and help a lot of people.....check them out! and happy strumming......
