Language barrier

The language barrier is very interesting between americans and australians.

You can say something and it could be perfectly acceptable in australia, but quite offencive in the States.

Quite amusing

hey Nomes-- vice versa too. My friend from Australia freaked out when she was here (Canada) and saw all these "Roots" sweatshirts. (there's a brand name "Roots" here, it's all over the place on athletic stuff) I guess it means something kinda bad....

and "fanny pack" too -- they're little purse things that have a belt on them, they sit over your butt, which old ladies call "fannies." But I take it that's offensive, too..... funny!

That's dogdy language to use in NZ.

In the advertisements for Mel Gibson's movie "Payback" the slogan was "Get Ready to Root for the Bad Guy." Obviously, in Australia and N.Z. they had to change the slogan to "Get Ready to Cheer for the Bad Guy".... or something. Because the last thing you need is a bunch of people getting ready to, uh... make love... for the bad guy. Apparently.

I haven't heard anything like that slogan. I've heard of the movie. Maybe they just made a new slogan.

I've only ever been in NZ so I dont know any different. In the first year at bible college, I had an American in my class so I quickly learnt what not to say.

Ooh, you definitely do not want to "root" for the bad guy...

Since when is "fanny pack" offensive in North America?

I think that's because 'fanny' is a crude term for a reproductive organ, and not the bum over here...'bum bags' aren't cool anyway! But I always have to laugh when re-runs of that American show 'The Nanny' come one and they sing "She was out on her fanny' - ouch, that's gotta hurt!

Every country is different, in America they think the 'forks' is a peace sign!
