Anyone do Opera?

Well, I almost hate to ask the question because I'm probably setting myself up. Not only am I posting in the visual and performing arts section which means I might get attacked by the theater people who don't believe that opera is theater related but I'm also posting in CGR which is a resource for guitars, not traditionally found in an opera. :klol: Oh well. I'm goign to do it anyway. I was involved in Opera with my college. It was a lot of fun. We did three performances. We had sets and costums. We did a scene from four different operas. La Traviata, Old Maid and the Theif, Ballad of Baby Doe, and Cosi Fan Tuti. They were really fun. We sang them all in English. I'm planning on doing in next yearbecause I had so much fun. I was just wondering if anyone out there has done opera or at least seen on opera and can relate. Let me know. Or even if you have any questions about operas.

I've done orchestra to part of Cosi Fan Tuti. Awesome song!

I personally think that Opera is really a nice art form, and wish that I could sing.

Horray! Someone who knows about opera. How cool. All my friends (well, except those who are doing it with me) make fun of me and won't go to my performaces. Its kinda funny. Everytime it slips out. I get a shocked and surprized reaction from people who do'nt expect a freshman in college to be doing opera. :klol: I don't care, its fun.

Opera developed along with theater...its very theatrical. Why wouldn't it be? People who are strictly "straight play" oriented and dont' see value in musicals/music drama/opera are limiting themselves.

I'm a vocal performance major at Dallas Baptist University. I've seen quite a few operas, and done a few as well. I was Pitti Sing in The Mikado, and August Tabor in The Ballad of Baby Doe (scenes...probably the most angular, difficult music I've ever sung!!). I've seen hmmm...let me think...Faust, The Marriage of Figaro, La Boheme, Turandot, Carmen, La Traviata, The Barber of Seville, ...and probably more that I can't think of off the top of my head. I ushered at Bass Performance Hall for a while, so I saw some that I probably can't recall.

Opera is absolutly wonderful. Its great to watch, great to sing,...but you have to be in the mood for it. One of the things I hate is that so many people have bad misconceptions about the nature of opera. Its sad. I wish that it wasn't so saturized so that people could see and judge opera for what it REALLY is, not what they saw on Bugs Bunny or Saturday Night Live. Opera is a genre of music that is extremely vocally and physically demanding. Even if you don't really like the music, you can at least appricate what the singers do to perform.

Yes I know!! The scene I preformed in was taken from the Ballad of Baby Doe. We did the scene when Augusta's four friends come and confront her about the growing problems and gossip. I was one of her four friends. Hard scene. The music is pretyt hard stuff. But it was really fun to preform. I enjoyed myself. I'm glad to meet another opera singer. That's cool that you are a vocal preformance major. I'm a music major but I haven't decided my emphasis or area of music. But I love music and I'm excited about it.
