trem bar goes....

Hey all, picked up a wicked cheap trem bar today but there's no place for it on my electric. This is what I see (bear with me I'm still new to electrics hehe):

1. Bridge thingy where I feed the strings in
2. Little metal conthingamagiggy that raises up the strings, each string has it's own little inlet to rest in. There are screws underneath it so you can raise and lower it depending on how you like it I suppose (can't think of any other use for it)
3. Coil
4. Coil
5. Neck, etc...

I guess I never paid extra attention when cleaning the guitar because I saw the guitars in the shop that had trem bars that just seemed like they were made as one unit (pretty matching colours etc). I take the trem bar home and there is no hole to screw it in to. Do I need to buy a new item #2 there? New bridge (it's detachable, that's new to me...)? New guitar?

I can't really visualize what you are saying. What brand and type is your guitar. You were right when you said some types of guitars don't have a trem bar. Les Pauls and guitars with two part bridges don't. Most Stratocasters and strat style guitars have tremolos. Look at the high-E side of the bridge. Is there a treaded hole? If there is, that is where the bar goes. If there isn't a hole, it will be cheaper to get another guitar than to try and get all the parts and cut on your guitar to be able to use the trem.

Let us know how it turns out,
Lee

O.K., so I read though your post again, and it sounds like you have a two piece bridge, with two pickups (coils?) right. If so, then a tremolo bar by itself isn't going to do you any good. Like I said above, if you really want a tremolo, look at getting a Stratocaster or stratocaster style guitar. Let me know if anything I guessed wasn't right.

Sorry if that wasn't much help,
Lee

Yeah, it sounds like to me you just bought a replacement bar or something. Also the way you described your guitar it sounds like it's not set up for a tremelo system. I haven't played an electric in years so bear with me here. The last (electric) guitar I owned had a Floyd Rose Locking Tremelo, which basically was a special bridge with the bar that had a pivot point on it to lower or raise the pitch of the strings depending on wich way you jerked the bar. it also had the feature of a locking nut that was a clamp which kept the strings from going out of tune every time you got a little aggresive with the unit. I'd let someone with a little more knowledge take a look at your guitar and see exactly what you need. If you bought the bar and there is no where to hook it up, maybe the guitar shop you bought it from will take it back or exchange it for store credit. Keep us posted.

Yep. you were both right. The guitar in question is a cheap Epiphone "Special Model". No hole for the bar

But, I'm in the market for a new electric anyways, so I guess this works out kinda nicely

Thanks for the knowledge (and the suggestions)

EDIT: funny little sidenote, as I was reading the part about returning it for store credit, I found my self with the bar in my hand chewing the plastic white part like a carrot top. That's embarressing hehe.

Second off, while I'm on the subject...do some electric guitars sound better/worse than others? That would expalin why the one I have sounds like 4 guitars playing in unison (all out of tune and nerve racking).

Yeah, quality and craftsmanship have alot to how a guitar will sound. I once owned a a Gibson Sonex, it was explained to me that it was another version of a Les Paul. Well it was another version alright, a real cheap version. It wasn't even made from wood, it was some sort of composite/fiberglass material that sounded ok but not like a Les Paul. It also had cheap harware and electronics. I learned alot from that experience. The only thing that was real exciting about the Guitar was the place I bought it from. My father took me into NYC, Manny's Music to buy it for me. Manny's is a famous music Store in Manhatten. Everyone who ever was someone in music has purchased something from theses guys.

Pastry, I've looked into the Yamaha EG112, and in searches it usually comes up as the Yamaha Pacifica. Is that the same guitar?

And if so, did you get yours online? Talked to this guy at Music Unlimited (big chain?) and he said that Yamaha guitars weren't sold all too much in MA, and my best bet was this place 45 mins away...

Might try mail order. American Musical Supply has some on sale. I think it is the same model anyway. Let us know what you find!

This is the only product I've come across in the wide world of computer markets. Is this the same guitar you mean?
