One can only assume we're talking about bass amps here... It's rather foolish to keep thinking that the original poster is referring to 800+ watt guitar amps when none are made by anyone but a boutique amp company at most.

A 1000 watt amp is only 2x as loud as a 100 watt amp.
is this to double the decibel rating, or the perceived volume? I'm hoping its the latter, but i always get confused.

Decibel ratings. I don't know how it compares to percieved volume. I'm doubt many people want to stand in front of a cranked 1000 watt amp to find out if it really is 2x as loud as a 100 watt amp anyways...

Bass players need that kind of clean sound at high volumes.

sorry i wasn't specific (at all)......yes, I was talking about bass amps (for the most part), mostly after going on ebay and looking at bass heads with a crapload of wattage on them. And I was exaggerating on the 800+ watts.....I basically meant more watts than I can imagine would be needed.

I did not know that bass frequencies had need for more wattage than guitars, though now I think about it, it makes sense. You learn something new every day I guess.

Actually there is no exaggeration. Many solid-state bass amps do go up past 800 watts. It's because, again, 1000 watts is only 2x as loud as 100 watts.

800 bass watts is pretty common. Sometimes you'll get a bi amped 450 or so, which is like 900 bridged. But yeah, the ratio I've seen is that 400 bass watts=100 guitar watts... So in a lot of loud bands today using a lot of guitar watts, the bassist needs alot times four. Mike Kroeger from Nickelback has... thousands and thousands of watts... But that is a case for the extreme.

DON'T FALL FOR IT

THE MORE WATTAGE IS PROBABLY NESSESARY FOR BASS AMPS. I'VE HEARD AND USED AMPS W/ 50, 100, 200 WATTS AND WOULD RUIN YOUR HEARING. STICK WITH A 100WATT TUBE AND 4X12 CAB WITH SOME GOOD SPEAKERS AND YOU'LL BE FINE. CHRIST BE W/ YOU
