| I've played a nice Squier 5 sting bass before buy Ihave also played a Peavey 5 string that blew the Squier away. I had a Squier Start that was Made in Mexico and it did have one of the nicest necks I've ever played on. To this day I still regret getting rid of that guitar. I will say this, the MIM Squier Strat that I had was a way better guitar than any Squier I picked up since then. If I had to show some one a guitar that it played like I would tell them to put a Highway 1 neck on a MIM Strat body. |

I don't believe Squier makes Strats in Mexico. They are all Asian made. But real Strats are made in Mexico.

| All squiers are made in Indonesia, Korea, or China. Real Fenders were once made in Japan, but now only in Mexico and the USA. |

Chesh | The head stock said Made in Mexico. The guitar even had a real Floyd Rose on it, not a licensed Floyd Rose. |

| Perhaps at one point Fender labeled all of it's "economy" models "Squier", but I really have no idea... |

| well, we'd need to know more info. inside of the soundhole there should be a paper that has the model number on it...that will help the users here address your query

| While on the subject, I'm still pondering the best method for newbies to acquire the ideal guitar. Perhaps a top-ten list. Perhaps a set of no-brainer principles.

| I think you have forgotten the fundamentals yourself, there is one basic rule that exsists in the realm of guitars. Personal Taste. I have had one of pretty much every brand guitar. All with differents bells and whistles. but my fav. guitar is a 1994 Fender American Stratocaster (with DiMarzio PAF Pro and Tone Zone, coil tapped with a TBX tone control) You could say I hate fender, well that is your preference, you can't tell some little kid what is the best for him, plus you lose out on all the joy of searching for "your" guitar. playing one deciding it's not what you want, upgrading to another guitar finding out what you don't like about that guitar and finding another guitar that fits your taste. then one day finally after years of searching you find it. I personally do not like les pauls they play slow, and have too muddy of a sound, however, MANY MANY guitarists love and will only play les pauls. I love the feel of a PRS you seem to hate them from the statement you made in your first post. however many guitarists Love and will only play PRS. Does that make them wrong or stupid no, I almost bought one a little while ago but decided against it only cause the next day I played the strat and they had a similar feel to me. But the PRS was incredibly crafted, you can dissagree, but you prove my point, no two guitarists are the same. Newbie or pro or just tinkerer(not a word I know) I think the kid should go into a music store and try a guitar to see how he likes it, taking a friend that knows about guitars would be nice but then again it is his personal opinion being put into the kid. Sales clerks I know are mostly in it for the money, something that can't be avoided. we all start somewhere and are taken for a ride most always in the beggining but you know what that is part of the JOY of learning to play the guitar, if it stays in tune and has decent sound, easy to play (I know they don't know what "feel" is totally but again I could tell you that the strat is the easiest to play and you could say no a les paul is and we are just dicussing personal taste) I would however agree that the MIM strat is a good place to start, basic but very very functional features. I am partial to strats the MIM strat was my first guitar. You have to also consider the fact that most people that pick up a guitar are going to go nowhere, and it will end up being a hobby. If you don't have the drive to struggle getting a G chord and switching to a C chord and then to an Am chord on a cheep guitar then how are you ever going to have the drive to learn Theory or write your own music someday. Ask any guitarist that is in the music industry today what they started out on I put money down that 98% of them started out on peices of crap that wouldn't stay in tune most of the time. It's all about discovery and growth. I would say, take a friend/friend of a friend that has a little knowledge about guitars. try out a few, see if it stays in tune while you bang out G G G G G AAAAAAA DDDDDD (most people can tell if the guitar is out of tune, newbie or not) if it plays for you good enough, buy it. and practice practice practice and then later on guitar may be something you enjoy doing save and upgrade, the beauty of guitar is learning, and that never ends. |

Chesh | First I guess I would have to say is... Play as many guitars as you can... All makes and models... New and Used...
I will say that some copies play just as good as the real thing as well... I know that for sure as I play a Samick Artist Series SG Copy and I love the axe... I also recently played an actual SG... Yes it did sound better with the better pups. But playability wise, I was not able to tell that much of a difference...
Another suggestion is take a well experienced player with you as well..
I have a friend who told me about a small guitar shop in our area that mainly sells copies of other guitars... But the shop gets in used guitars all the time as well. My friend said that the guy who owns the shop sets all of his guitars up so that the action is fantastic. So I went there and man was I surprised...
This guy has some very nice Ovation, Taylor and Martin Copies that played so nice. This guy takes the time to set up all the guitars he gets in, new and used and he does a great job... The acoustics were all set up perfectly (at least for my taste)... I was amazed... The guy at the shop admits that the tone quality might not be the same as the brand name counterparts all the time, but he says his plays a 100 times better... And I will say that I might have to agree with him... I didn't have to fight any of the guitars at all...

| who started this thead? I thought this was your thread chesh? I directed my question to the author of the thead, and anyone else that may agree with your topic, which is "This must be the worse advice you could ever get in the entire world of guitar buying" I guess I need to make myself a little clearer next time. |

| hey crash...have you really had one of "pretty much every brand" or just one of each of the major brands?
considering your inability to use anything remotely close to paragraph spacing in your previous post i really do have trouble believing that you're old enough to have own even one guitar from each of the major modern brands. that being said, you made some valid points that already really were addressed as far as i know.
as far as PRS goes, if you actually read what he said, Chesh isn't necessarily anti-PRS, but he doesn't think that they are worth what you pay for them. When you buy PRS you're buying a name and you're buying looks. if you've ever read a PRS-rant by Chesh you'd understand that his stance isn't because he thinks PRS's are junky, but because they aren't cost-effective.
