Christian Music Guitar Solo Contest

Purpose:
The purpose for this type of contest is to vote on some of Christian music's finest guitar solos based on listening to unnamed samples. This eliminates potential band or artist bias and gives hearers an opportunity to listen to the choices back to back.

Submission Guidelines:
Each person is allowed to submit 10 songs for this challenge. To make a submission, contact me at gpc@playthrume.com or send me a PM for info on how to do so. PLEASE DO ***NOT*** POST YOUR SUBMISSIONS HERE! There are many ways I can accept files so do not assume we cannot work something out.

Submissions must meet the following guidelines to be included:

01 - They must include at least song title, artist and album title.
02 - The length of submissions should be no longer than the solo itself or a maximum of two minutes in length. If you feel an exception is warranted, feel free to contact me and explain the situation.
03 - Whenever possible, submisstions should be in 128Kbps mp3 format or something of similar or better audio quality.
04 - Entire songs will not be considered. However, if you lack the means to edit your song, submit the song along with beginning and ending times and I will edit the track for you.
05 - Those who submit duplicates of songs already up for vote will be asked to pick another one, so please have alternates in mind.
06 - Different solos from the same song *may* be considered if they differ significantly from each other. Live and studio solos from the same song *may* be considered if they differ significantly from each other.
07 - Nominations must be from a commercially released album, not a live bootleg or unreleased recording.
08 - This is a Christian Music contest. Please submit only Christian music. Indie artists are welcome, but see # 7. The point here is to display some of CCM's finest music. This is not the place to debate controversial issues.

The Voting Process:

Voting will be open to everyone. How many "rounds" it takes will depend on how many submissions we receive. The samples will be paired with similar styles of music as best as possible, however song title and artist will remain unlisted until the winner is chosen. The reason for this is to make sure that people vote based on the quality of the solo itself, not on a personal favorite artist. While it isn't possible to be entirely unbiased, we'd like to limit it as much as possible. Samples will be placed on a website for download. If you have a problem with mp3, contact me.

So, be thinking about what ten guitar solos you think are the best!!!! When you've picked them out, send me a message!!!!

The cutoff date for submissions will be Monday, November 24th.

If you have any questions, please post them here.

That depends on how quickly people start sending in their submissions. Obviously if everybody waits until Nov 24, it's going to take a while to sort through all the submissions. At the latest, I'd like to start voting Dec 1, but that depends on how many last minute submissions I get.

OK, some tips on encoding files:

I've used this one on occassion to edit and I think you can save as mp3 if you
download the plug-in. The help files on the website are really good.

Audacity: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

MP3 Plug-in: http://www.mp3-tech.org/software/encoders/lamewin32.exe

I've heard very good things about the free version of Goldwave, but I believe
that needs an mp3 plugin as well:

http://www.goldwave.com

There is some legal technicality that won't let free editing programs
distribute the mp3 encoder with the software...I don't fully understand it. I
always use a separate encoder anyway so it doesn't bother me.

For encoding, I've had good results and heard good things about this encoder:
http://download.com.com/3000-2140-10125657.html

Others can be found here:
http://software.mp3.com/software/
and http://www.mp3-tech.org/encoders.html

I use Sound Studio and SoundJam (now out of production) to do all my editing
when I'm on my Mac (which has slightly more free hard drive space than the
PC).

As soon as I get more entries!

Now that the funeral is over, life should start getting back to "normal" soon, I'll set a new date and start promoting this again. Maybe it was just the wrong time. I got a lot of people who said they were interested but never sent anything.

I'd really like it to, but I've only had five people send me stuff and most haven't come close to the ten song max. Is anyone else still interested in this?

I'd do it ,but they would all be from the same artist,Phil Keaggy, and that wouldn't be fair.

What's wrong with that? There's no limit to how many solos by one artist. A good solo is a good solo!

Does anyone here object?

No objections to the multiple-submissions by same artist. Most people feel that way about their favorite performer anyway.

We can simply stone anyone who doesn't list Keaggy as number one

But seriously folks, this contest is a good idea, and it's possible I might bring up a guitarist whose name is more obscure too! (David Zaffiro or Ray Parris).

I was kind of expecting it to happen, and it's not a bad thing.

Yeah, why not!

Hey, that's what it's for! I've seen plenty of "Best Guitarist" and "Best Solo" discussions, so now it's time to step up and prove it, and hear about some great music in the process!!!

So c'mon, send me a PM if you're interested. Even if you don't have the ability to make or send mp3's! We can always look for someone with the same CD that can! I really wanna see this happen, folks!
