I assume it comes in two versions; a CD and a DVD version. There is no way one would need five DVDs to install the game; that would be ~21.5 GB of data, and HL2 only takes up 838MB on my hard drive.

No you don't.

I got this on the 16th. It's the best game I've ever played.

I'm running a pretty weak system compared to the recommended specs.

Athlon 1050mhz (100mhz FSB)
256mb ram
Geforce 2 mx400 64mb (DirectX 9)

But it runs great!(of course, I'm not playing at the best settings) It has the best visuals I've ever seen on my computer, and it runs just as smooth as the original Half-Life does. Oh man, this game is so awesome.

Ah, it must come in two versions then. One DVD or 5 CD's.

Well, there's hope for you yet. Apparently piraters already managed to crack Steam's authentication system yesterday. Check your PMs soon.
I got it working. For some reason it loaded really fast and just started running fine. I recommend that everyone with a broadband connection get this game via Steam because there are so many errors with the CD-ROM and DVD version. Just go to the tech support boards at sierra and see how many angry people there are. I bought this game from amazon.com originally and it wouldn't work. I am sending it to Sierra and asking for my money back. I downloaded it from Steam and besides some stuttering getting it going, it worked much better than the CD-ROM version (which isn't working at all).

SPOILERS

I saved just before getting in that hoverboat thing that you're supposed to ride down the river.

What does Sierra have to do with the game? I thought it was just Valve (the developers) and Vivendi Universal (the publishers).

Anyways, I'm glad you got it working. I'm still waiting on my graphics card to come in the mail. By the time I actually get it, you all will probably have beaten it. Haha. My CS:S buddy Hiroki actually beat it yesterday, and it's not that short a game. Crazy.

Thanks for you help. I have no idea what the deal was with the load time.

SPOILERS

Man, I've reached a pretty tough part. I've died twice here already. It's in the Entanglement chapter and still in that Nova Prospekt prison. I'm stuck between two force fields and tons of soldiers are rushing me from four different locations. I have turrets guarding three, but they always knock them over rather quickly and blast the crap out of me.

Ah yeah! That part took me a while to get past. What I did, was, put two turrets at at the further entrances (semi-close to the force field, that way they can't use grenades to topple them), and one at either of the closer ones. I used the crossbow, grenade launcher rounds, and the shotgun the most. I died about 5 times trying to beat this part. hahaha

I got by it, but I didn't think to put the turrets right next to the forcefields. That would've been smart of me, haha. Instead I hid in a corner cell and as the guards rushed in I blasted them with the shotgun. I nearly died. At one point my health was 6 and my suit was 0.

Now I'm back in City 17 and it is a warzone.

SPOILERS

I beat it just moments ago. Disappointing ending. It just makes no sense at all. Though this does mean that Half-Life 3 will have to come along and tie up all of the loose ends (and there are so many).

Ok, so other than the fact that this game won't load for $hit (pardon, but I'm really frustrated right now ) and the sound's choppy, and the video won't render right, I guess it's pretty cool. I can't see well enough to do anything, so I've been pretty bored with it so far.

So my question. I finally got the game to install correctly and I'm having two problems. First, the sound stutters and from what I've read, it's a common problem - I can deal with that. Second and most importantly, does anyone else see pink checker boards where flying machines or screens are supposed to be? And does any one else see moving objects as the way wrong color? I have checked every single video setting I have, re-installed my video drivers and updated Windows and I still can't get the d@mn (pardon again) video to look remotely close to right. Anyone have any ideas?

That's really strange.

What motherboard and CPU are you using? Did your computer come with the card installed, or did you install it yourself? How's the airflow in your case; do you have a couple case fans in there in addition to the CPU fan and power supply fan? Does your video ever stutter or act strangely on other games? Have you tried posting on any other message boards, like steampowered.com's support forums? The guys on Gamespot.com's forums tend to be pretty knowledgeable, too.

Ultimately, you may need to reinstall Windows. It tends to act really strange and screw up on me if I leave it on my hard drive for too long without starting fresh every once in a while.

I'm running a 2.4 GHz P4. I built the thing from scratch and it runs every other game I own just fine.
