There are some really good books out there, but the only one I can think of at the moment is The Tube Amp Book by Aspen Pittman (the owner of Groove Tubes). I'll look and see what else I can find for you. Go down to your local library and see if they have any older electronics books...often there will be chapters on building small tube amps, and why they work. These books are usually older (most newer books cover only solid state electronics), and in the electronic section. Radio books also have alot of good information (again, these will be mostly older books), and there are probably some good sites that will have some info.

Oh, and for lots of good general electronics stuff, head down to your local radio shack, go to the back (past all the cell phone junk) and look for books called Engineers Mini-Notebooks by Forest Mimms III. There are several of these that deal with small amplifier design (mostly using solid state components), and some other musical related devices (tone generators, etc.).

Another good book is Inside Tube Amps by Dan Torres.
