Radagast

Is my favorite character. I love Lord of the Rings...perhaps I should post on the book matters here like the Maiar. But you all seem to have a good grasp.

Radagast is my favorite. I don't think he was as throwaway or useless as people perceived him.

Part of what drew me to Radagast is the vast amount of silence Tolkien left concerning him. I refuse to believe he was some goofy wayward wizard.

People tend to get down on him for playing into Saruman's schemes. But they forget how much GANDALF was tricked...he was the one who told the Brown Wizard to report his findings and concerns to BOTH Gandalf AND Saruman. Then Gandalf went and got himself imprisoned by Saruman.

I feel like there is still a tale, a grandoise one, that waits to be told about Radagast. Mayhaps I have leanings of my own on its content.

Aiwendil was sent specifically by Yavanna. She pleaded to have him sent...partially for his love for flora and fauna, which matched hers. But to plead? To beg?

He was declared a "worthy wizard" by Gandalf in The Hobbit. He was know for his unsurpassed depth of knowledge of, love for, and devotion to flora and fauna...yet the Ents said the only wizard who cared about them was Gandalf. Strange...they were the keepers of a vast forest...which is a large section of flora in Middle-Earth. Why didn't they say, "Ah yes, alongside Radagast, the unsurpassed lover of nature?" Maybe he was something else to them than just a wizard. It may have been a gaffe by Tolkien, but it opens up a world of possibilites.

He was known for his love especially of birds...how many times were eagles key figures in the history of Middle-Earth? Perhaps he had a connection. Saruman scorned him...jealousy, perhaps, for one begged for by a Valar.

That's part of my ramblings. I find Radagast fascinating. I have my own theories, and personal wishes. That's the beauty of Tolkien.

Very good! This is what I like to see. Often time on Forums I just hear "I like so and so!!" with no reason behind it. This is very refreshing

I agree about Radagast. There is more to him than meets the eye. As to the reason the Ents didn't say much - I never thought about that. I will check into that.

So you like Radagast huh? That is truly intruiging.

I had never really thought much about him, except that Gandalf knew him(i dont rightly remember, but where they cousins? i think i heard or read that somewhere....) and seemed to associate with him easily. Im glad someone finds a special and particular value in a character little known.

As for lover of nature and such, that certainly makes him very interesting! Do you know if hes mentioned elsewhere in any Tolkien books?(The Histories, or War of the Jewels or maybe The Silmarillion or something?) Radagast might have some sort of connection with Elves. Which would make him even MORE appealing.

Anyway, God bless.

I'll give you a bit Evenstar

He is known as Aiwendil (lover of Birds). He is briefly mentioned in the Valaquenta part of the Sil and more is given in UT (The Istari section).

Man, now I have to read UT!!!!!! I had no idea that they talked about the Istari in UT. And I didn't know that they mentioned Radagast in the Sil. Oh well. Good to know for when I reread everything.
