Help on my major in relation to my career :D

I decided to be an actor. Can anyone help me?

Do I have to major in theater?

It depends. If you want to be an actor, it's very helpful when you've taken a bunch of stuff having to do with drama. If you take a lot of theatre/acting classes, you'll be more likely to be cast in plays, which go down on the resume you send to theatre companies.

I have a few friends who are aspiring actors and they're all majoring in theatre and are also taking speech, voice, and dance classes. You could major in theatre (not only musical theatre workshops and stuff like that, but the history behind plays/playwrights, etc) and then have a certificate for speech and gain experience in singing/voice inflection and movement on stage.

There are so many options open to you! I would suggest you see a counselor about all of this, and good luck!

Assuming you mean live theatre acting and not movie or tv acting, then yeah, I'd say the same thing. I had some friends in high school who have gone on to major in theater... none of them have graduated yet, so I can't tell you how it worked for them, but i'm guessing it's the way to go.

Also, this may or may not be good advice... I'm just speculating here... You might want to go to a school that's in an area with lots of theater opportunities around... some place like New York maybe. But talk to some people who know more about acting than i do first.
