| Anyone have Rats? I am thinking about getting a pet rat? I've heard/read that they are very sweet, smart, make great pets, clean, and all that wonderful, fun stuff. I had a hamster, but he recently left this world . I've been told that rats are a lot more socialable and sweeter than hamsters, which can sometimes bite and be mean. What do you guys think?
P.S...please don't go ...."eww gross, rats"...because the rats we keep as pets are not the same as the rats that live in your school cafeteria. Okay? Lets get over the fact that sometimes wild animals are similar to pet ones (like wolves and poodles?). Its not grosser to have a rat than a hamster. K? Thanks.

| I don't own a rat myself, but I think they do make good pets. My little sister's best friend (they talk for at least 3 hours everyday on the phone) has a rat, and she often brings it here for a couple minutes. They like to climb, are very smart, rarely bite (if they're raised right), they do snuggle a little, (or make the best attempt rats can), but do smell. So if you can deal with the smell, and their curriosity and inteligance, you should be well off!
Good luck with your new pet.

| Eww gross, rats! Maybe you meant hamsters or gerbils. Rats have disease.
Someone close this thread please. |

Someone close this thread please. | WILD rats have disease. Just like wild dogs do. There is a huge difference between a wild rat, and a domesticated rat. (for one, domesticated rats are usually white)
Maybe you were just being silly. I don't know you well enough to know.

I used to have some rats when I was younger and I thought they were cool although i was too young to fully enjoy them. I was thinking about getting one recently but bought a ferret instead. supposedly they can be REALLY cool pets and you can even train them to use a litter box. The other nice thing is that they're really inexpensive. I'm sure they don't smell THAT bad as long as you keep their cage clean

| Rats are so completely awesome. I *HIGHLY* recommend them. My brother and I used to have pet rats as kids. We even had baby rats (they are sooo totally cute as babies) a couple times.
They really are smart. We used to take them out to the front yard, call them by name and they would come to us.
Very sweet and extremely clean (contrary to what many believe).
The only sad thing is that they tend not to live past 4 or 5 years. Still. They're really great. |

| Rats seem like they'd be a neat pet to have. I prefer things that eat rats though, snakes.

| the girl across the hall from me has a rat. Mr Wiggins. He is clean and all that stuff... with the exception of the fact that he has a thing for trying to climb down peoples' shirts. Take it from me, having a rat down your shirt is quite the interesting experience. He also chews on long hair which doesn't hurt. I have a cat at home who does that, so yeah...
but yeah. he's very friendly, very sociable... all that stuff.
not saying that all rats are like that, but that one's pretty cool.

| Of course I won't go "eww, gross."
Rats are awesome.
I don't own any, but my dad likes rats. See, he was out mowing on the riding mower, and in the tall grass there was a rat. It ran away and my dad ran over it with the mower and pieces of rat sprayed all over the lawn. It was pretty tight. Rats are awesome. If you didn't have rats, you couldn't run over them with lawn mowers. |

| I raise rats to feed to my pet demon. And my snake.
None of those three things exist, in reality. |
