That works if she lives in a state where they have a sales tax. Some, like Oregon, have a state income tax instead.

I think most states do...here in Washington we do, creeping towards 9%

Yeah, you're right. I've grown up with the sales tax of Washington, so I didn't think about Oregon. They are always the exception

I know a really good way to figure our tips at restuarants...

First take 10% of your bill (this is easy because all you have to do is move the decimal over one place. So for example your bill is $34.56, take 10%, which is $3.45 (or round to $3.50 to make it easier for the next step)

Then take half (or 5%) of that amount. So half of $3.50 is $1.75.

Add the 2 numbers .. (10% + 5%)

3.50
1.75
------
5.25

This is your tip!!!! $5.25

Hope this helps!!!

Peace.

Jay

I just double the tax or so if I do not want to actually calulate.

Yeah, the double the tax method is usually pretty good, but all states have different tax rates and it sometimes becomes confusing...(you don't want to over tip..)

Here in Illinois, there are different sales taxes for every county you go into. For example, in DuPage county (about 10-15 miles west of Chicago) the tax is around 7.75%. If you enter Cook County (where Chicago is in) the tax raises to a little over 8%. If you are actually in Chicago, the tax even gets higher...

Since I live in Cook County (but not Chicago), work in Chicago, and my parents live in DuPage county this can get rather confusing . So I just stick to my method of 10% + 5% so that I always give the right tip that I want.

Peace.

Jay
