Yeah, the double the tax method is usually pretty good, but all states have different tax rates and it sometimes becomes confusing...(you don't want to over tip..)
Here in Illinois, there are different sales taxes for every county you go into. For example, in DuPage county (about 10-15 miles west of Chicago) the tax is around 7.75%. If you enter Cook County (where Chicago is in) the tax raises to a little over 8%. If you are actually in Chicago, the tax even gets higher...
Since I live in Cook County (but not Chicago), work in Chicago, and my parents live in DuPage county this can get rather confusing

. So I just stick to my method of 10% + 5% so that I always give the right tip that I want.
