| rack users represent! Whats with this forum? There's like absolutly NO rack users at all! Either that, or none of them are speaking up! LWatford uses one, and I think maybe one or two others, but other than that, it seems like NO ONE else uses rack gear! Where are my fellow rack men? Post your rig!
Mine's small since I just started, but I have an Epiphone Les Paul going into a Marshall JMP-1 preamp, then into a Peavey Classic 50/50 power amp all held with a 4 space SKB roto rack. I'm currently looking for a power conditioner to fill the last space and a cab to hook it all up to.
C'mon rack users! Speak up! There has to have been like 5 posts in the last week all about the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. Whats up with that? No offense, its probably a great amp, but there hasnt been one post in MONTHS, if AT ALL, besides ones I've started about rack gear! So I wanna see if any of ya'll even exist in CGR. So, post your rig! |

| Racks aren't terribly common among guitarists these days...not the 'popular' ones anyway. Every show I've been to in the past couple years has had the guitarists using head and cab combos or a regular 2x12 combo. Aside from that, this is the amps and accessories forum...not GUITAR amps and accessories. You'll find a lot more bass players (like myself) using rack gear than you will guitarists in my experience.

| Your telling me! I totally recognized that the "popular" thing to do is go with head/cab or combo. There has been a very small amount of rack users in this forum. I was just looking for the people out there that go against the flow! We could be the punks of the forum! I dont mind if you play bass and use a rack. I realize that this isnt just a guitar amp and accessory forum. If you use any rack gear, post it! It doesnt matter if you play bass or whatever. If you use rack gear at all, then post it! |

Originally Posted by Clayton what are some of the advantages to rackmounted gear? What makes them so expensive???? | Well, actually I got my rack gear for less than buying a head. I bought a high quality preamp, but bought a cheaper power amp, but still of good quality. I saved myself a couple hundred because of this. But in the long run, you might actually start to spend more money than you though, once G.A.S. hits you. When it comes to effects, I've heard that most rack effects are generally better quality, plus you get more versatilty and MIDI control. Some general advantages to rack gear: much more versatilty, most have MIDI control, easier to mix and match your gear (especially useful with preamp/power amp selection), and you can carry it all in one case. I might have missed some, but I'll let the seasoned rack pros to get the rest. Of course there's also some downsides to rack gear, you just have to weigh the good and the bad and see if its for you. I dont think rack gear is for everyone.... its barely even for me. I'm not much into rack effects, I'm more of a stompbox man, but even those can be rackmounted and controlled via MIDI. But I really like the versaitily of MIDI preamps and being able to choose what power amp to match it with. |

| I think rack mount gear is like the great unknown around here. Not too many people know about it, or how to use it properly. I would fall into that category too. Also I really would not have any use for it. My electric playing is limited. As I get older I find myself more into acoustic playing. When I record stuff I use a J-Station, so I guess that would be the closest thing to a rack for me.

| Someday I would like to get into recording rack gear but I dont think I would use it for guitars. I use a fairly simple setup so I don't see a need for a rack.
