| I'm not Dutch, but I wish I was. I just visited Holland for 2 and 1/2 weeks about a month ago. It's so beautiful. I could rave about how much I liked it for a long time, but I'm sure you already know how nice it is. I do hope to go back sometime.

| Hi, Ingrid:
Reading your first post reminded me of when i was
a kid living in germany, and we would read the multi
language inserts in the books and on some packaging.
Dutch/ Flemmish seemed almost understandable to
us, somewhat constructed like german, only with
different spellings. (Danish was the same way,
similar but different.) We used to listen to the "Happy
Station", i think from Rotterdam back in the 1960s.
I have a great deal of admiration for the people of
Nederland, and your history. I am a student of
maritime history, and the Dutch figure prominently,
with some of the finest sailing vessels in the world
of that time. I also collect Delft. I like blue and
white motif.
I used to collect stamps from Nederland. I have some
that go back to 1859. But most have queen Juliana
on them, from the last war. My familie lived in
Strasbourg at that time. We come from the german/
french border area ( Baden-Pfalz.)
I hope to see the tulip festival someday!
I wish i could say something to you in nederlandisch,
but i never learned a word, really.
God Bless.
-gary.

| My ancestors moved here from the Netherlands...probably 3-5 generations ago for all of them, though. I think I'm 100% Dutch ancestry. Sadly, should I get married, that will probably stop with me, as most American Dutch girls are married by the time they finish college |

| Ok, let's try it:
Hallo Ingrid! Hoe gaat het? Ik heet Gary.
doei!
Boy, maybe i was a little off on how similar it
looked to german. I notice a similarity between het and heet. Are these words
forms of each other?
( now, when i was a kid in Bayern, we would
have said Hallo, 'gehts? - or wie geht's Ihnen if
it was a teacher or and adult. Ich heisse Gary.
I can see a similie between Ik and Ich, sort of.)
Holland figures very prominently in european history.
Their government of the 1600s was the most liberal
in europe, and served in many ways as a model of
our own. Which was why the Pilgrim fathers spent
over ten years in Leyden, in exile. Holland fostered
not only the first true porcelains in europe back when
it was a deep, deep secret in China, but also in
structural and marine engineering. Your country is
very small, true, but it left a very large footprint
in history. Alas, americans are not very good with
their own history, let alone europe's.
In fact, wasn't the Hansiatic league based from
Amsterdam? This league gave the world it's first
uniform navigation laws.
Oh, did i mention the dutch masters and their
influence in the Art world? Rembrandt? We're
just beginning!!
Then, there's Kapstaat, suid Afrika and the colonies.
Hey, a person can learn a lot from collecting stamps!
-doei!

'ik' is the same as 'ich' in german . | I wonder if Dutch has gender oriented articles like German,
which has Das for neutral gender, Die for feminine, and
Der for Masculine, and the grammar structures around these
genders?
Let me know if i am asking too many dumb questions, i don't
often have opportunity to speak to someone from Nederland.
Another dumb question, is Dutch similar to Flemmish? Quote: |

Originally Posted by ikje Rembrandt is our greatest painet yes. but we have more painters. Vincent van Gogh, ect... | There were, i think, more painters per square kilometer in Holland than
in France. Yes, the list goes on and on . . . Also, one of the most famous
engravers in the world, Theodore De Bry was dutch. As was Escher,
of the 20th century. Quote: |

Let me know if i am asking too many dumb questions, i don't

Another dumb question, is Dutch similar to Flemmish? | We used to have a few feminine, neutral and masculine genders, but most of that is forgotten, and much of these words doesn't excist anymore. There are three left: 'de' (m.), 'het' (f.) en 'een' (n.). These words have the meaning of 'the'. But there isn't a structure, according the fact that 'the woman' in Dutch is 'de vrouw'.... (a masculine form).
Interesting is the fact that much English words have a Dutch origin and the other way. Like:
boss = baas (pronunciation: boass)
furlough = verlof (furlough)
coleslaw = koolsla (coleslaw)
cookie = koekje (cookje)
frolic = vrolijk (frolic)
knapsack = knapzak (knapsack)
snack = snack (snack) (from the old-dutch word 'snacken' what means 'great desire to something')
And there is a big relation between Flemmish and Dutch, they're almost the same! the pronunciation is a bit different but understandable, and some words are called different (a 'vaatdoek'(dishcloth) is there 'aanrechtdoek' (kitchencloth) and a 'theedoek' (tea towel) is there 'vaatdoek' (dishcloth)). Complicated, isn't it?
And one last comment: your questions aren't dumb at all!!!! At least, I am proud that you are asking about that little dry froggiecountry of ours!!
By the way, I like history very much, especially Dutch history.
Doei, -xxx- Monique

| yes, holland (aka the netherlands) has had a big influence on europe, anyone ever told you that new york was called nieuw amsterdam (new amstadam) untill "we" sold it to the british? thats why a lot of americans cant properly pronounce a lot of streetnames (they are still dutch ).
and also the dutch did a lot of trading all over the world, during the so called golden century. they were one of the most powerfull countrys in the world (they "possesed" whole Indonesia).
now we are but a small country and a member of the european uninon and the nato. |
