Unless you're the kind of person who has to stare at your bass neck while you're playing in order to hit the right notes then playing a fretless isn't a huge adjustment. If you're used to playing without looking it's not too bad at all if you've got the same scale length you're used to. I'd love to have a fretless to noodle around on, but it doesn't fit our band's music to really justify buying one for constant use.

Oh well. I have a pretty good feel for where the notes are on my bass, it's just that if I were playing fretless high on the neck, playing quickly, I would probably get lost.

Like Brent said, it's not that bad of an adjustment...the thing that kills me is every note has to be dead on, so you can't "cheat" like you can on a fretted bass (by cheat, I mean when you're going for a note and you don't hit exactly at the fret, but that note still sounds....). My bass has lines, but I made them dark, almost the color of the fingerboard (but for the lines to be any help at all, you've got to be in tune).

Dang... I pulled out my Electro-Harmonix Bass Balls for our show last night. I forgot how fun that thing is! Really funks things up in a pinch! Not a whole range of sounds from it, but it's fun to use from time to time. That and the overdrive from my Sansamp Bass Driver DI coupled with the compression on my amp head made for some PHAT bass sounds last night...and I've got the blisters and missing pieces of finger to prove it!

Yeah, I have one of those. It came in a neato wooden box. I like to use it with the overdrive on.
