Publishingıs singer/songwriter Steven Curtis Chapman has won the title of BMI's Christian Songwriter of the Year. BMI (Broadcast Music, Inc.), the performing rights organization, saluted Chapman and other writers and publishers for the past year's most performed Christian songs, during the BMI Christian Music Awards held this past Monday evening at their
headquarters in Nashville, TN.
Along with Songwriter of the Year, sharing that title with Gerald Crabb and Kirk Franklin, Chapman was given top airplay honors for his penned songs, "God Is God" and "Magnificent Obsession", both No. 1 hits from his RIAA certified Gold project, Declaration.
Eddie DeGarmo, President, EMI Christian Music Publishing, comments about Chapman's awards, "Steven has been one of our top writers for many years. He continues to impress us with his amazing talent, and we congratulate him on these well-deserved awards."
Licensed with BMI since 1985, this is the third year in a row that Chapman has walked away with Songwriter of the Year Award. He has also been previously recognized for his songs, specifically the No. 1 hits
"Fingerprints Of God", "Great Expectations" and "The Invitation", from
1999's Speechless, RIAA certified Platinum.
The BMI awards are given in recognition of popularity in the field of
Christian music and are determined by feature broadcast performances on American radio and television. The 2003 Christian Music Awards eligibility period ran January 1, 2002 through December 31, 2002.
