| Can't go wrong with a Shure SM58 if you're using it for vocals or an SM57 if it's for a little of both vocals and/or instrument mic'ing. It'll run you about 100 bucks, tho.

| What do you want to use it for?
I'll second the SM-57 for instruments and live vocals, and as just a general do anything mic. If your budjet is a little more, and you are mostly recording, I would look at a Rode NT-1. This is a really nice large diaphram condenser microphone, and it sounds wonderful. The school I'm at have a pair of them and they use them for everything. Saying that, they are delicate, and are not ment as stage microphones. There are also several other good deals around, I can't rember any model numbers though. The best thing is to shop around and check the internet for comments.
Anyway.... If I didn't know what I was going to need, I would get the 57. You can always find a use for it somewhere!

| what if my budget is low, and I plan to do only vocals with it, but in lots of situations? (i.e. recording, youth group praise/worship, Young Life Club, scaring my cat, etc...) |

| Sm-57, or some type of clone. Check thift stores (not kidding!) and you may find something. Radio Shack had some nice mics made by shure, but I don't think they do that anymore.

Flat out the best mic for what you are talking about.
Here are some things I have used it for:
Recording:
Guitars, Vocals, Bongos, Congas, Amps, Drums, etc.
Live:
Amps, Vocals, Drums, Bongos, Congas, Djembe, etc
It's on the presidents podium so it's great for speaking to (you need a pop filter though)
I wouldnt recommend a clone. It wont be as solid. It wont be made as good. It's not a Shure.
The 57 right now is only 79 bucks with a cable and stand! From musiciansfriend.com
Just my advice, < ben >

we just got some beta 58s for church and its a great mike and the voices sound very natural... its been a great improvement esp in services when voices are very important.
if ur into voices, beta 58s are the way to go. |

| I would Definately go with Shure SM-58, I've used them in running pro audio for everything from instruments to Lead vocals, and the way I see it is if They use them on David Letterman then there Good enough for me, and there only about 100 bucks, and if your using them in a enviroment where they could get dropped and beat up then definetaly get the SM-58's

| Neumann KMS105!!!!
that's if u have $500 to blow
other wise a SM57 will do...=)
i have 3 of them
i recently got the KMS105 and that thing just kills all the vocal handhelds on the market hands down
with live mics SHure is a good brand...u can depend your life on it...i find that the SM57 has a nice prescence boost for thin sounding vocals...it's really gives it a nice warmth...
the SM58 is a little brighter sounding and is better for guys
both a good but depends on who the singer is |
