A few reasons:

- The boards are growing at a pretty good clip right now, and I don't think they need the help.
- Server resources. It's an additional db query on the front page, which has plenty of queries already.
- Real estate. When I took out the last five posts, it moved everything else up a bit, making it more visible.

They make come back again some day, but I don't see any reason to have them there right now.

EDIT: Mickey beet me to it

If I remeber correctly it was causing some major band width problems on the front page. Mickey has a lot of problems with the site going down, and removing this helped out. That is what I remeber.

Boy I forgot what the old designs looked like.

Not really. In terms of just bandwidth, that's just a bit of text and isn't a big deal. We are allowed a lot of bandwidth with this server, and haven't had issues with it.

It's more just server load, and the sloooooowness that you often feel on here. That's because the server has more to do than it can handle, so things back up. Taking that off the front page helped the load a good bit, although we're still overloaded just from traffic. That will be fixed soon enough with the new server (next week, we hope).

Joy. Ok, so my question is answered.
It was interesting to see what the site looked like before I came along. It's like...history.

This is definitley always going to be my favorite, simply because it brings back so many good memories of last May..

Man! I remember the latest 5 posts thing! I used it way back when I first signed up and was busy debating... far out. I had forgotten. Thanks, Mickey!

Are the message boards nearing being too big, financially?

You don't have to answer that, if you don't want to.

Not really. Disk space, in and of itself, isn't a big problem for us. On this server we have about 50 gigs free, which will give us plenty of space for the next few years.

However, as the forum grows in size, it does begin to work the server harder, as the post and thread tables get larger and larger. Still, there are sites running vB with five times our number of posts, and they're doing alright.

So, at least for now, things are fine financially. The Google ads are good to us (although not as good as they are for others - our ads tend to be more of the low paying kind).

Also, as Luke has mentioned before, the boards have grown to the point that they're driving much of the new traffic to the rest of the site, which is great. The main site makes more $$ per pageview (I have no facts to support this theory, but I'm confident in it), since there are pop-ups out there from time to time, and people are more likely to click on the ads.

Anyhow, to answer your question, no, I don't think they are.

Mickey
