Surgery for Long-term Singing

Hey, I was just wondering if it's true that you have to go through some kind of surgery to get something removed in ur throat, because I've heard that people who become singers have to do this, some girl at school did it. I was just wondering if it was ABSOLUTELY necessary or if you don't really have to do it. Thanks!

the only vocal related surgury i've ever heard of is castration for boys back in the day.
no surgury is neccessary to sing, unless you have some hardcore voice problems, then one might be needed. i've never heard about one though.
