| Ok, I found out about the mesa series 1 and 2, and i can live with a series one if that means i save a couple hundred.
I went to Guitar Center today, read my other post about power amps and preamps at the bottom where I talk about what happened. At first, I wasnt considering rack gear because I though of it more as stuff for the "pros". Now that I know more, its becoming more and more accesible and possible for me to get, even cheaper than some other stuff I'm considering. To summarize, I'm trying to decide between a amp/preamp or a head, and I tried some Marshall heads and I liked the sound. So I was wondering whats the best Marshall heads out there? Also, whats a good one for my price range, but still sounds good? Like a single rect is a smaller ultimate mesa, triple rect (or road king, whichever you think is ultimate), what would be a smaller version of the ultimate marshall?
My list has changed, so here it is now:
1. Mesa/Boogie Single Rectifier - tried it again, liked it better, found a better tone, but not perfect to what I want, still not sure if I like the distortion, especially after trying a Marshall. I think my issue with it is just the way mesa's are. The only one I've tried that doesnt sound like it is a Road King. But maybe I'm wrong and just dont know how to EQ.
2. Rivera Knuckelhead K-55 - Sorta still on there. I dont know if I'd feel safe buying one without hearing it, but everyone who has bought Rivera amps that I've heard of has always been satisfied.
3. Peavey Classic 50/50 power amp with Marshall JMP-1 pre-amp - the JMP-1 is what Stephan Carpenter of the Deftones uses, the guy who's heaviness I'm after. This is appealing to me for reasons mention in my other post.
I plan on adding a Marshall head to the list, just dont know which one yet.
The Line 6 is off the list now. I couldnt try the Flextone II HD head, but there was a Flextone III combo which is an upgrade of the Flextone series that I tried. I didnt like it. It was just too much. I might be able to dial in a good tone, but it was complicated, didnt sound that great. I'd rather plug in and wail away then push a ton of buttons just to try to get the thing to sound even somewhat good. Plus, its not "real", I just dont like the feel of it. Maybe I'll get a PODxt when I record in the future, but until then, I'm staying away from Line 6 amp modelers. So anyways, thanks guys for the help. |
