Martial Arts

For those who study the Martial Arts, I was wondering, which arts do you study and why? Also if you could give a description, maybe a bit of history...
I'm considering studying Wing Chun. For an example of Wing Chun, go to http://www.wing-chun.co.nz/Gallery.htm
click on 5, and there are some video clips to check out, .mov and .avi's

I've been a big fan of fighting and the martial arts for a while, although always more of a spectator than a participant. I have several friends that have trained extensively, though. Here's 's the site of the dojo at which they train / have trained. My friend Adam Stevens is a second or so dan in tae kwon do, and after earning that began training with Walt Bushy. An acquaintance of mine (I uesd to see him around there all the time when I hung out there and we got tatttoos together... lol), Jason Ash, trains for kickboxing there and is the Texas amature light heavyweight champ.

I've been training in the art of Shaolin-Do for the past ten years and have received the rank of second degree black belt. Shaolin-Do originates from the original Shaolin where most of the martial arts began. I'm sure everyone and their brother, who is interested in martial arts, has heard of the Shaolin monks. Shaolin-Do is the same except more Americanized.

The history is of Shaolin is rich and detailed, and information can be found at Shaolin-Do This site gives some history of the system and also shows state-by-state locations of instructors.

Shaolin has helped my life in many ways, not comparable to how Christ did, but I would recommend it to anyone. We are taught self defense, fighting maneuvers, animal forms, meditation, pressure point attacks and more weapons than you can shake a stick at. It is very intense and is known as the most comprehensive style in the world. Some things to boast on are Grandmaster Sin The`, who is recognized all around the world, especially in China and the U.S. and Senior Master Bill Leonard, who is currently the highest ranking caucasian in the world.

If you are interested, seek it out, it is fun and exciting.

I really wanna do Tae Kwon Do. Partly cuz I need to get into some sort of shape and partly cuz I LOVE the style.

Plus w/me being a former soccer player, the kicking really kinda drew me to it also.

Well aparantly you can get a black belt in tae kwon do in about 2 years...
btw I had my first wing chun class last week friday... very hard an cool. I learned the first form, Sil Lum Tao... can't wait for the next one. For a person used to boxing, it was very hard to not move my shoulders.

nah...doesn't mean anything... I'm just saying, if that's what you're after, then it doesn't necessarily take long.
But of course if you really want to study the art then it's pretty much a life time thing

I've been told that the black belt is easy, but moving up in degrees is VERY tough, and takes years.

I wanna study the real thing. I don't really care about the belts and junk. Doesn't really mean squat to me.

I studied Tu Kong Moo Sol for a while. Its a modern Korean style. It was developed in the 50s by the Korean special forces. It combines the strengths of various styles to make a better all around fighter. Since it was developed by the special forces, it focuses more on the practical use and less on the art. The art aspect is still their however.

I agree that Tae Kwon Do is pretty worthless. I have a black belt and was pretty good, but if I had to fight someone, I would use what I learned from being on the wrestling team.

I think hapkido is one of the best ones to learn. Teaches you how to break a fall and how to throw people and break them. It was a lot of fun, for the very brief time that I tried it out, and a good workout.
