Conscience Clearing

Admittedly, I know very little about Anglicanism. Actually that is why I am here. Some of my friends and I had been discussing Mel Gibson's movie Signs, and we were wondering about the scene in which the girl "clears her conscience" to Mel who was a former Anglican priest.

My question is this, does the Anglican Church support "conscience clearing" to their priests? or was the fact that he was a former priest not relevant? Or was she just crazy? Just an honest inquiry.

He was Anglican?

I assumed, with it's Midwestern setting, that he would have most likely have been a Lutheran priest. I don't think it was stated, but I like to assume that he was Lutheran.

That said. Yes and no. If we go by the 39 Articles, confession is not a sacrament, and can be done between the laity just as well as it can be done with the Priest. If we go by the Catechism, which is an abomination to Holy Writ in several ways, confession is a sacrament and the sacerdotalism enters in.

Whatever, we're a mixed bag...even in our own prayer book.

If, however, he was a Lutheran...that could be different. I have been to several Lutheran churches that actually held confession, making them different than any of my local Episcopal churches in that regard.

All of the movie review sites and information that I have seen say that he was Episcopalian. Thanks for responding though. I learn something new everyday.
