And The Winner Is.....

Congrats to Guitar MC for winning the first ever CGR Guitar Solo Competition. And Congrats to all who entered, everyones solo was a winner in my book, they all sounded great. Hopefully we will be able to do this again. You can view all the results in the sticky thread at the top of the forum. I'll leave the results and the entries up for awhile.

yeah great job...

i found it interesting to see who won because there were many styles of playing represented there. it's hard to judge what's best when you're comparing rock to jazz and blues. lol... at least i found it hard.

Congrats Guitar MC. I didn't vote for you though. Although I enjoyed your playing and thought your entry was quite good and one of the best, it wasn't a guitar solo. Good funk rhythm, yes. Solo guitar, yes. Guitar solo, no.

I'd like to hear a good definition that successfully contrasts Guitar Solo with Solo Guitar. And something better than "no chords allowed in a guitar solo" or similar statements...

Oh, and congrats Guitar MC. I liked most all the solos, but I voted for yours because it was "funk-telligent."

Well, by "solo guitar", I meant guitar by itself with no other instruments. Usually solo guitar refers to fingerpicking styles like Travis picking where the guitarist plays a melody and rhythm simultaniously. In the later case "solo guitar" would be considered a "guitar solo".

I guess what makes solo is melody. Lots of jazz guys use chords in their solos, but the melody is still defined, which is why that technique is called "chord-melody".

Guitar MC's entry was a funk rhythm, not a solo. If you can't tell the difference, listen to John Frusciante. He plays Guitar MC style while backing the vocals, but when it comes time for a solo, he plays an actual solo.

I think it should just be overall guitar peice next time.. I like doing layered sounds and stuff (phil keaggy-esque). That would be cool.. next time to just have a guitar peice deal, and not focus so much on the solo aspect. The solo is only half of the experience, the context of the music going on around it is the other half.

Yeah, congrats Guitar MC. This is your magic day. haha

I was surprised that I even got a vote, considering my sub-par entry and all. But, I was even more suprised that misteragreable only had 3 votes, I realy liked his. anyway it was a cool little game.
do you guys have the next competition planned out?

*EDIT* just out of curriosity. BluesJunkie, who did you vote for ?

hmm

congrats again man
and maybe next time sub-divisions

we could have rock category,a pop category, a blues category, funk, flamenco, etc.
with winners in each then maybe do some kind of overall winner
the winners from each category do something new and we pick a winner just a thought
:kcool:

I bet if we come up with enough categories and if we're all diplomatic in the way that we submit our recordings, everybody can win :kgrin:

Congratulations, Trey! I really enjoyed your piece.

Out of curiosity, how did you achieve that funkadelic sound? Any special chord progressions or techniques?

I'd like to learn how to play that style...it's so cool!

Thanks a bunch, and again, good job!
