#1 | | baby vending machine | why yeah... what I'm asking is why are you learning ((or did you learn)) sign language?
in my situation... my paternal grandmother had 6 boys... the oldest 3 were born hearing and the youngest 3 born deaf. My dad was one of those born deaf. Mind, I only lived with him till I was 2 or 3... Sign language was actually my first language! I've tried learning it various ways over the years, but have forgotten for lack of use. I can still do the alphabet, but that's about it...

| The very first song I learned was in a kids singing group at my old church. After that, it was for children's church at our current church. Those things sparked my interest, and I started taking classes because I want to be an interpreter.

| I learned how to fingerspell in elementry school so that i could communicate with the deaf kids on campus.
In 8th grade one of my very dear friends was deaf, so my parents hired a private tutor to teach me so i could communicate with her in sign language as opposed to her always reading my lips. I don't see her too much anymore though Then in 9th grade one of the families i used to babysit for found out their youngest daughter was deaf, but she later got the colocear implant so they discouraged sign language with her until she learned to talk herself. |

#4 | | Cool enough Administrator | I plan to learn it, because I want to know it. Basically, I think that it will be good to know. I've run across deaf people, and had a bit of trouble communicating with them... this would be very useful. Plus, not many people know it... but I could communicate secretly with those that do |

#5 | | Guest | i learned at church... there was this deaf lady and they always had to have someone to sign for her. i was 4 and very interested so i'd sit on the front row on the side the signers were on and i started learning. then when i was 9, one of the ladies started to give classes so i did it for 2 years. now i live in brazil and haven't had a signing conversation in over 5 years, so i've kinda lost some of it.... | |

| Well our church used to have alot of deaf people and it always intrigued me. I learned the basics and the manual alphabet when I was little and have studied and picked up more as I have got older. Some of my friends at school also know fingerspelling so we vcan communicate in class without getting in trouble for passing notes and there is no evidence like stray notes laying around for teachers to find.

| I like the thought of being able to talk with my hands.

| I've known finger spelling for ages; I learned it so my friends and I could talk under our grade four teacher's nose. I don't know much other sign language, but I know the important stuff (For instance, "I'm bored"). |

| I learned it mostly for songs in Church. I don't know a lot but I would enough to fumble around if I need to talk to someone. I know finger spelling too so that helps.

| I took a class in 8th grade and forgot most of it. I can only remember the alphabet, but I would like to know a little bit more again.

| Wouldn't it be cool if International sign language was the primary "foreign language". Partularly on a multi-national level. In addition to being terribly useful with the deah (and the occasional trained chimp, oraungutang, and gorilla), you could speak with anyone else trained in it regardless of a shared spoken language.
I really need to grap a computer course and refresh mine.
Oh heck, I think they should teach it to at least one ape in every enclosure (they do teach it to one another). Wouldn't it be fun to go to the zoo and actually talk with the animals? Or would you question caging them then? |

| If they can think/talk for themselves to a certain intellectual level, I dont think that would be a good thing. Planet of the Apes! Aahhh! I do like that international thing though. Make everyone lean it in the world in school or something and it would really help traveling.
