| Of course hey can think for themselves. Baboons, Chimps, Orangutangs, and Dolphins have all been established self-aware. It is assumed that the porpise family (porpises, killer whales, pilot whales, baleugas) and gorillas are as well (though none have yet been formally tested). They are generally rated with an intellect similar to a human child of 3-5 years (depending on which animal).
Dolphins, Orangutangs and all the great apes have been taught language (sign in all cases except dolphins who lack correct appendages). All will create new words as the need arises. Chimps have been observed to teach undtrained chimps sign language, and to teach other trained chimps the unshared words. |

| I'm learning sign language because, I think it's a beutiful language..
more importantly then that though... If a foriner comes to this country, and speaks another language, I don't feel bad not being able to communicate with them. This is my country, and to live here they should speak MY language
but sign langage is different. These are people who can't communicate in our language, and it isn't there fault they can't. It is OUR responsibility to learn how to communicate with them! As a Christian, I want to be able to communicate effectivly with others, and the deaf and dumb (is that policically correct??) are a very high population. The more people who can communicate with them, the better

| I took several classes at my church when I was in elementary/junior high with my sis and some friends. I thought it was a lot of fun and I got pretty good, but then when the classes were over, I forgot a lot of it. 2 years ago they began a sign class at my school, so I took that. I'm now in signing 3 and 4 (semester classes). It's fun to be able to talk to several of my friends in sign language....and to bug other people!! I'd kinda like to do something with sign language next year in college, but i dunno. |

| Well, I started learning Sign Language because I want to be an interpreter. I love the language. And I'm good at speaking it (according to my teacher). I'm currently not going to school for it but hope to starting fall 2005--after I have a car and some money!

| I am currently "bootlegging" lessons from my Hard-of-Hearing roommate, who is taking ASL. Over the past year, she and I have become pretty good friends, and she has taught me quite a lot. We will sometimes communicate in sign when she can't hear well, or just to have a private conversation. It is pretty fun |

| I learned sign language just because I wanted to, no special reason.

Her parents are both deaf, her father cannot hear or speak. Her mother can hear 10% in one ear with the hearing aid on. So, she taught me sign language... there's a group of deaf people that get together at the mall on Friday nights. I have a real interest for it. I have only communicated with my friends mother before though.. it's harder for me to understand than it is for me to sign. Do to lack of use though, I have forgotten a few signs.
