Hey guys... I just picked up an old Ampeg V-4B. I believe this one was made in the mid-seventies. Has anyone here had any experience with this head?

I played through one and it's matching 8x10 cabinet at an outdoor gig last year and I thought it was absolutely awesome! VERY warm and oozing of tone...quite loud, too. All I know is the guy paid (traded in an equivalent amount of gear) $1000 for the head and cab a few years ago. I actually saw the same rig in the classifieds here for something like $700 or $800. If I had the money, the space to haul it in, and the stamina to move it from gig to gig I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Brent,

I just picked up the head for $217. I need to get some output tubes for it though. I will let you know how it goes. Thanks!

up date on my rig, I now have a warwick FNA jazzman 5 and a carvin bk5a and I still have my fender bassman 200, I want to get rid of my fender amp and get an swr 4-12 cab and an ampeg svt-3 pro head, but that is a lot of money, money I don't have at the moment. I will be really glad when the music store I frequent gets his mesa boogie liscence in a couple weeks, ohhhhhh mesa boogie

I've been spending my dough on the basses and effect rather than the amp. Well, I don't really need a louder amp yet. Maybe after I find a band and get some gigs. I can't wait for the stadium tour!!! Wait...I'm getting ahead of myself.

I don't need a louder amp, just a better amp, one that sounds like I want it to sound, the fender with the 15 just is way too deep of a sound for my liking

Tom,

I'm familiar with the Fender Bassman (assuming a single 15"?)

If you want more top end hit get a 210 or 410.

If you look above you'll see my rig...

If I run full range into the 115 it is warm and mellow. You can pick out the higher stuff, but its smoother.

If I run full range into the 410 it will go as low as the 115 but it is much "hotter" and "brighter." (Tighter and punchier would also work.) Also much more defined in the high end. (Course it has a horn in it, so that might be cheating.)

I'm gonna come to your house and steal your amp, I've wanted a full stack for a very long time, never had the money to get one, actually it was the patience that was the problem. yes my bassman is the single 15 with the horn, but I play a 5 string so I need something that can handle the low b but not be a real deep sound, one day I will have a 4-12 cab with a 350 watt head

Dude, all the time. I like the bass a lot; my teacher actually likes it a bunch as well. That was probably the most influencing factor in my dad buying it . Good bass. Sounds nice.
