Medication

Scripture commands us to remain sober and vigilint (as well as all the warnings about drunkenness because it impairs one ability to reason and so forth)

that said, how do we deal with ill ness and medications such as anesthesia, morphine and sudafed (which takes me out of it all day)?

peace
D

I personally don't have a problem with such things. I don't see how such things violate that command when used responsibly. It would be one thing to be on morphine when driving, for example, quite another to use it as an aid in recovering from illness.

what about something like medical mariijuana? I think the consensus is that recreational use is wrong, so why would it be considered ok for cancer patients?

Just a quick point - you could use the same type of logic to argue against ever going to sleep.

When you sleep, you are even LESS vigilant than when you are whacked by cough medicine.

Like I was saying over in the tattoo thread, use common sense. God gave it to us for a reason. If you have a minor cough, don't drink an entire bottle of NyQuil. If you go have a beer, don't drink more than you can handle (depending upon body weight, experience, etc.).

How does being sick and in pain help you remain sober and vigilant? It does not. God is concerned in our health, our bodies are temples of God. Something to improve that would seem to be pleasing to God.

PS: I can see people starting an alcohol debate from slap_j's comment please don't. There are other threads for that.

[Me] LOL I was about to say the same thing

I believe that God made us stewards over our bodies, and as such our job is to keep our bodies in prime condition. We shouldn't opt to avoid treatment that well improve our condition if a temporary decline in our condition will result while we recover from surgery or medication or whatever. We should take the best care of our bodies as possible.

Scripture is fairly easy on this one:

Proverbs 31:6-7

Contrariwise! When you're asleep, you are ultra-vigilant, blocking out all temptation (as well as everything else).
