| Ultimate Stratego Anyone here ever play ultimate stratego? I'm convinced it's the greatest modern strategy game (chess being the only better strategy game I know of). It's built off the idea of traditional 2-player stratego, but they changed a lot of rules that make it soooo much fun. One of the things I love about it is that it doesn't involve a roll of the dice in any way....so there really isn't any luck involved in winning or losing. Here's a rundown of the basic rule changes from regular stratego:
1. The game is played in 2 teams of two, where partners sit a cross from each other.
2. A team wins the game when they either capture both of their opponent's flags or unite their own flags anywhere on the board (that's right, the flags move in this game!).
3. The ranks are switched - 10's are most poweful on down to the least powerful 2's.
4. A player's hand has 20 pieces:
-4 2's (which, like the old scouts, can move as far as you want in a straight line).
-2 each of 3-6. The 6's are special in that they can optionally move two squares in one turn, either in a straight line or in an L-shape.
-1 each of 7-10. The 10 is the most powerful piece.
-2 cannons (rather than bombs). The cannon's can move now, and they can fire. Cannons will always lose when attacked, and always win when attacking. They can only attack by firing 3 (and exactly 3) spaces away.
-1 spy. The spy will lose when attacked by the cannon or any numbered piece, but it will win when attacking the 10, the flag, another spy, or a cannon. It's purpose is to assisinate the 10.
-1 flag. Like I mentioned above, the flag can move now.
5. Rather than both players losing their piece on a tie (as in regular stratego), in ulimate stratego, the attacker wins.
6. You begin with 13 pieces on the board, and 7 pieces in reserves. You can choose to bring another piece in either after you win an attack, or in place of taking a normal turn.
7. You don't lose when you lose your flag (assuming your partner hasn't already lost theirs). Instead, it goes into a special square marked the "stockade" next to the player who captured it. Your flag can later be rescued.
This game is an absolute blast! I've been playing it pretty regularly for about the last 3 years (which was shortly after it first came out), and I still haven't grown tired of it.
Anyone else played this?
