try humming the note softly to find the pitch before you actually sing

Can't help you there, though I'd be interested to hear the response to this, considering I have the same problem. I'm really good at playing by ear and figuring out tunes, but I sometimes have a problem of finding the key when I start singing.

Something my vocal coach told me to do was think "up and over" the note before you sing it. Think like a basketball going in a perfect arc into the net, or a rainbow curving (arcing) towards the ground, and then try to attack the note from an arc. If you are finding that you are "scooping" (coming up from under the note) when you sing the first note, trying to come "up and over" should help you.

As far as finding the pitch of the note before you sing, the only help I can give you there is practice, practice, practice. I've been playing piano for 10 years, so I have a pretty good "ear" for singing pitches, but there really isn't any trick to getting the pitch, you just have to sing it so many times that there's no hesitation, and you just sing it.

Good luck!

See if i hummed the note i couldnt do that for everysong. cause id have to start. cause wed be leading worship . so........ I dont really get the arc thing but......... if you wanna explain thatd be great!

The guy who leads teh worship i think prob has it worse so i REALLY need to be able to hit that first note nice and strong. and i play piano too. (as well as guitar) so.........

OK, heres a picture:

0 - high note
_ - note you want to sing

0 - low note

Scooping is when you start at the low note and slide up to the note you want to sing. Scooping is bad.

Too much high to low is when you sing too high and slide down to the note you want to sing.

What you want is a slight arc (just a little bit above the note you want to sing - ie hardly noticable). It helps to get this arc by focusing on the images I was talking about ( a basketball arcing into the net ). I hope this makes some sense. If not, PM me or email me, and I'll try to explain better. Hopefully I'm not confusing!

Personally, this is why I lead into every song with guitar... gives me a chance to stand back and hum to myself where I should be. I really only have to do that on a few songs...

yeah that's what i do. that give me the right key and i can find the note from there. i play rhythm guitar so it helps in that it sets the key and i can go from there.

Wow, humming has helped me a lot! Why didn't I think of that?

Just out of curiosity, why is it easier to find the note when you hum than when you sing?

cuz you have time to find the pitch
rather than trying to get it blindly right from the start.

people who can get the pitch without a cue usually have perfect pitch so they already have the pitch in their head. THat's why they don't need to hum or listen to a note first.

think of the starting note by the note of the scale it is...
most songs start on the 1 or 5 of the scale.
for example...
I want to know you is in the key of G, and the first note on the verse is a G, so it starts on the 1 of the scale.

the first note in "heart of worship" is an A, and the song is in the key of D, so thats a 5 of the scale.
think of it like that, and listen into the chord for your note.
thats how i do it.

if that doesn't work for you, humming, as previously mentioned, is the best way.

Also try to do as many songs as possable in the same key,

and try to have chord modulations inbetween differant keys, thatway you are always thinking inthe key your starting in, not the last key you were in.

This helps alot because singing is reletive, and it's in your head,
Part of learning to sing is matching what yu hear wth what you are singing, so if you stay in the same key, or use a modulation, you have a point of referance.

Try it,

hope that helps someone...
