well depending on the book there wil usually be some bold terms in the text. some of those are good to remember. you dont necessarily need all of em but just get to know them enough that you could pick them and their meaning out of a multiple choice question. also if there are chapter reviews, be sure you know those. that aside look at teh text a a while for some underlying concepts and try to at least get a slight grasp on them.

adn space it out. study some here adn some there. dont't cram cause you won't remember things as far long term that way. depending on the subject my study methods vary. for the harder NT survey class i ahve it's a combination of looking at the terms, study questions, and in there's some geography be partially familiar with that.

help any?

oh adn quiz yourself on things that you think might be on a test

For math at least, I find that practice, practice, practice is the key. It's all the better, too, if you can find problems that require knowledge of multiple subjects to solve.

For others, it's always best if you can find some way to quiz yourself on it. Other than that, though, I'd say that it really depends on your style of learning. Some people are just fine with reading, but I find that I need to write stuff down to remember it, and others may find recording themselves to be beneficial. Find what helps you remember things, and adapt it to the subject.

Finally, yes, cramming is evil and can kill your brain. Try to prepare at least a couple of days in advance for a test, though a week or more is preferable if it's a harder subject.
