I'd say Enter the Dragon would be the closest.

I don't think anyone will kill Ridley for it

I included The Godfather and Star Wars Series as a series because I don't think you can seperate the movies on their own; each one requires the other.

American Pie I and American Pie II, on the other hand, or the James Bond Series do, indeed, stand alone as individual movies without carrying over the same artistic themes.

I think movies can be seperated. Say you like Return of the Jedi better than A New Hope and you like Empire Strikes Back the least. But you like Goodfellas better than A New Hope and Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Matrix better than Empire Strikes Back?

Its not an issue of them being seperated on the quality of the production; its an issue of artistically seperating them into distinct stories, something that I don't believe the creators (Coppolla and Lucas) intended. I look at those series as a whole movie with three acts rather than three distinct movies that continue a previous story. Admittedly, both the Austin Powers and the Christopher Guest trilogies don't necessarily meet those standards (though the Guest films come much closer).

And Goodfellas isn't on my list. The Godfather is, however, and yes, I think the Star Wars and Godfather series are artistically better than The Matrix. The Matrix is, indeed, visually stunning and has an energy that propels it forward. But, just as it is getting good, it sees how high it's flying, and then falls back into shoot-em-up formula. If I can borrow from Roger Ebert's review, it needs an ending that is transformational, rather than a simple shoot-out. In short, it needs a third act.

in no particular order:
plus, I'm doing these on my impression of the movie right after I saw it, the ones I came out of the theater or a tv really liking the movie.... because a lot of movies I have come to greatly appreciate the second time I've seen them.. (so a lot of things get thrown into the mix, i.e. the girl sitting beside me, of if there was one !)

1. The Rock
2. Rescuers Down Under
3. The Patriot
4. Snatch
5. Fast and Furious
6. North by Northwest
7. Gone in 60 seconds
8. Meet the Parents
9. Aladdin
10. Jurassic Park

*sigh* please follow the rules anyhow guys. Even if you feel that the original SW trilogy was all one entity, rank them in the order that you like them... It's a top 10 list, and it would be really easy to list 18 movies that way. It's not a matter of them all being one story line, it's a matter of which *individual movies* you like best, regardless of being part of a series. After all, The LOTR trilogy would be #1 on my list (probably, have to wait to see ROTK), but none of the individual movies would ever hit #1.

a few changes as of late... still in no particular order

Change Shawshank to Boondock Saints (if you've not seen this, you should check it out. Incredible movie)

Change What Dreams May Come to Reservoir Dogs

that's it. We had Movie-Fest 2003 at a friend's house this weekend. 5 movies, 7-foot screen w/ projector, and X-Box. It was awesome.

These are in no particular order. I hate catogorizing art. I hate those who try to. These are also my favourite right now, it changes constantly. Comment please.
That's certainly a unique list. You don't give any of the cliche answers which is refreshing. I need to see The Killing so I can comment on how ludicrous it is putting it over 2001 or Dr. Strangelove for that matter.

Have you heard of any of the other ones? If so what did you like them? All are worth renting/watching.

I've heard of them. If you hang around the rottentomatoes.com forum long enough, you'll hear about all kinds movies. But yeah I'll remember them in the ever growing list of movies to see.

From your list it's pretty obvious that you aren't really concerned with cinema that has any true merit. That is why I was perplexed by your choice of I Am Sam. Where as this Film doesn't really gain any, it certainly tries. It comes up with a truly sappy excuse for a movie. I understand the popcorn movies, to each his own, but the psuedo-intellectual films have to go. If you are into that check out another Sean Penn movie like Hurlyburly. If not, T3 is coming out soon.
