Le Pacte des Loups (Brotherhood of the Wolf)

Anybody seen it? If so, what did you think?

Yeah and I started a thread on it like 2 months ago.

Its a very cool movie. There aren't too many martial arts, horror, mystery, who done it, political french films. I really can't imagine anyone calling it predictable. The director had an extremely cool style and the movie had a great look.

I love Mark Dacascos. I've been a fan of him for nearly 10 years. This movie just helped to reaffirm my liking for him. Sometimes I wish I was a girl so I could marry him. He's extremely cool in this movie. His mad skills look even cooler with the directors unique style. His slow motion thing was great.

Why haven't all of you seen this film?

I thought that it was very cool. It kept me glued until it was over (or maybe that was just Emilie Dequenne ). Coming from a martial arts background myself, I was totally captivated by Mark Dacascos' fight sequences. Steven Seagal hasn't got anything on them...

There were so many different things going on at the same time that it could have taken any one of a number of different turns, which I like, because I don't like predictability.

So...Why haven't the rest of you seen it yet?

I saw it a while ago. It was well filmed, but it was just a little odd for me. I liked parts of it a lot, and other parts made no sense at all. Like how an Iroquois warrior is a martial arts master. Right.

But it was a decent movie for the most part.

Umm maritial arts werent' just developed in the orient. Martial Arts forms have been established around the world. Why couldn't the iroquois do the same?

Well, they did have their own forms of combat, mainly wrestling style, grappling, etc, but I really doubt that they had a carbon copy of the Oriental martial arts for their unarmed combat. From the bits of research I've done, they didn't really use their feet in the Kung Fu style all that much.

The first time I saw this movie I thought the guy was asian before they said he was an Iroquois. The Native Americans were great warriors, I know that, but the movie makers could have given their combat style some originality rather than take the easy way out and just have the guy do Kung Fu or whatever discipline he used.

*Spoilers*

I'd say that there were things that made much less lense then him knowing kung fu (I still think you're wrong, but we can agree to disagree on that). For example, there are giant monsters in it, the white guy out of knowwhere becomes Iroquois fighting man, etc...etc...etc. The movies wasn't suppose to be taken that seriously like that. The goofy stuff made it all the better.

edit

Why haven't the rest of you seen this movie yet?

I saw it awhile ago, thought it was cool but really didn't know what to say about it.

It's cool.

That black haired chick was hot!

SPOILER
It did seem kinda strange that the main french dude dressed up like his friend after he died and became indian fighting machine white man. At least it seemed strange to me. Also it was strange that the evil guy curled up his arm all the time - wouldn't it have been numb when he brought it down? Also, what was his totem?!?!

What, no one agrees with me?

BTW she's playing a "vixen" in the Matrix sequals this year. Guess she's a female agent or something.

of course Sean agrees with you.

I agree with you about those spoilers too, but that was kind of the fun thing about the movie. It threw logic and reason out the window and was just crazy.

I felt that it was intentional. It had an underlying element of the unknown, and I think that this added to the uncertainty. It worked off the natural human uneasiness about the unknown.

In an interview, Mark Dacassos said, "I see Mani as a supernatural being, linked intimately with the forces of nature. He doesn't live on the same sensoral plane as his peers. For me, he's a metaphysical character."

His style was very interesting. There was a definate Chinese influence there, but there were the acrobatics that come with Cappoeira (developped in Brazil, but African in origin). I think that this contributed to the sort of eerie type of character Mani was. It made him that much more mysterious, I thought. Maybe that was just me looking too deeply into it.

Being a martial artist myself, I just found his insane skills amazing. He's studied something like 9 different styles, Tai Chi, Northern Shaolin Kung Fu, Wushu, Pa Kua, Cappoeira, Chin Na, Shui Jiao, Wun Hop Kuen Do (which his father and mother developped), Western Boxing...and probably a few more that I can't remember. I just really enjoyed watching him kick butt.
