Mooch out in SF

49ers head coach Steve Mariucci was fired today. Did he deserve it? No. Did he build a good team out of a salary cap nightmare? Yes. But was firing him a good move? Yes.

As long as he was head coach, the 49ers would never make the leap. When you have Garcia and Owens, you can't have a conservative mindset. They should be shoving Owens down opponents' throats. That offense should be lethal, and given the right head coach, will be. Good move I think.

I'm ticked. The front office blatantly lied about this.

DARN IT! I love Steve, even if he is conservative at times. But, for the better of the team, maybe they did have to do it. But I still have to hold it down for Steve, he's a great coach and I hope he gets picked up by a good team. (NOT THE BENGALS!)

I hope he takes a year off, and waits for something better than Cincinatti or Jacksonville...

I agree with Zooropa...The 49er's were never going to make the next step up to the likes of the Tampa Bays, the Titans, the Eagles, and the Raiders until they got someone who could really coach the team with the players he had.

Yes, SF had some major injuries, but didn't the Titans have Mcnair banged up half the year, Kearse out until the late weeks of the season, and several key offensive guys banged up all year? Look what they have down.

Good teams play through injuries. so that is not a valid excuse.

With Owens, who is Bar-none the most explosive offensive weapon in the league, he should be getting over 100 yards receiving every game, several Td's each game, and should bust 40 yard reverses.

When the really use Owens then that will open up the running lanes for the 9ers' runners.

Defense needs a little help here and there, but should be fine

Name me another coach out there not coaching right now who can do a better job than Mooch.

I can't think of any.

The only reason that they did this is to get a coach who could coach at about the same level, but not have to pay him as much as they paid Mariucci.

Mariucci deserved it. He liked to try to play games with SF so I think it's pretty funny that he's out on his butt. Remember that crap he pulled with talking to Tampa Bay and all that while under contract with SF and without telling them anything? Remember him through the media about wanting more money rather than going to the people in the front office first?

Mooch was jerked around more than he jerked. He had permission to talk with Tampa. If he didn't that's quite a fine. He is a very good coach. Yes, he didn't fit the team perfectly, but he was the best available. It was ridiculous to see what he did for this organization, and then see him tossed out before his contract was even up.

What he did!? I seem to recall them winning a heck of a lot of super bowls back before he came into the picture and I don't remember him winning one with them (unless he was the coach there in 95... I forget). Seems to me like he ran them into the gutter and then picked them up out of it. Big deal. lol

He is a good coach, not a great coach. Only great coaches can get the team to the next level (the Super Bowl).

obviously they(SF) are looking for a great coach.

Ahhh, Travis, you must not know what the real situation was in San Fran. Carmen Policy and Eddie DeBartolo put them in the gutter, not Steve Marriuchi. I'm not saying it was bad for Policy and DeBartolo to do that. They were also resposible for a lot of wins and Super Bowls. Policy made very creative cap moves that made San Francisco very good for a very long time, but it all had to hit down the road somewhere. It hit about a year before Mooch took over. They were still good at that time, but they weren't nearly as good as they had been. That became painfully obvious when Aeneas Williams gave Steve Young is career ending concussion. Steve Young had been holding that team together, and without him, they fell apart. After all, their entire defense was long gone. That's when Bill Walsh and Mooch made the team good again. Walsh did it through something he had already done: Scout and sign Jeff Garcia. Man, does that guy ever have an eye for quarter backs... Mooch took a team that shouldn't be winning, and hadn't been winning, and made them win. Mooch had nothing to do with the downfall of that organization, but he had a lot to do with the reemergence.

And by the way, with that defense, there isn't a coach on Earth who could get these guys in the Super Bowl. Yes, Garcia/Owens/Hearst is a great combo, but they aren't exactly Montana/Rice/Craig. Plus, their offensive line sucks.
