| Sports are like the definition of pornography given by a member of the supreme court:
I don't know how to define [what a sport is], but I know [one] when I see [one]. |

This topic is way too subjective to be taken seriously, like the "Sport/Not a Sport" thing they used to do in SI.

| Tennis, track and field, they are sports because it is the COMPETETORS ability and skill alone that make them the winners or losers. Not their ability, and what a judge thinks.

| Hey I'm extremely sorry but unless you are a dancer you can not say that it is not a sport!!!!
In ancient times part of the ritual athletics was dancing!! Dancing has been a sport since 1200BC.
I dance, Iteach dancing, it's highly competetive and much more hard work than learning to play football. I know because I've done both.
YES IT'S A SPORT!!! |

| :kroll: Another new person who must argue a point that the majority has agreed upon and pounded into the ground, please do NOT start this up again. Your opinion is respected, but you're in the vast minority.

| Hey, if it's not a sport, why does ESPN show dance and cheerleading competitions?
I don't care if it's a sport. In a week my girlfriend leaves to go to Orlando with her school because she is on the dance team. They compete and work their tails off. Every day after school til 530 they practice. Every Saturday they work from either 9-3 or 4 or 12-5 or so. Monday they practiced at 7 AM til Noon. Sundays they practice from 1 - 3. They go to competitions a lot and go through a lot of training. Is it a sport? Um, that's a toughie. Like it's been said, it's about as much of a sport and football is an artform. It is considered part of athletics in school programs though, so it's sticky. Anyways...my girlfriend will be on ESPN because of her dance team competition! Just 13 days until she'll be back from dance and it won't dominate her life anymore!!!! But wait, that's not what this is about....
*Writer's note* I hate the dance team because it's full of a bunch of annoying girls who are trouble, plus it takes all of Chelsey's time and makes her tired and cranky a lot, and used to keep her from being able to come to church for a while. So, just for advice, if you're a girl looking to make it to the dance team - check and make sure what kind of situation you'll be in.
All in all, dancing is not considered a major sport, but it is considered athletics in school programs.

| Nope. I call it an athletic artform. Not a sport. I group it with figuire skating and most of gymnastics. Just because they require a high level of physical exertion doesn't mean they are automatically a sport. I mean, some pieces on some instruments (especially woodwinds or brass) require a high level of physical exertion and those competitions are decided by a judge, but nobody would call it a sport.
And don't get me started on NASCAR....... |
