I think Bill is referencing Alexander Hislop's contention that "Rome" in this context is refering to the RCC, not the imperial capital, which isn't what you're doing.

Yeah, I realized that later.

When I say Rome, I mean the Roman empire.

To say that the Roman Catholic Church is the antichrist would make me a silly dispensationalist... and we all know that ain't the case.

Regardless, his contention is ridiculous.

But to make a claim that it is something based on nothing. How does Babylon = the Roman Empire? There is no evidence to suggest this is a true contention.
