Acoustic-electric

What are some good acoustic electrics that are less than $400?

Well, for under 400, you're not going to get anything great. The ovation celebrity is around that price. They are known for their sound when plugged in. Their accoustic sound would do, but if you want a guitar you can play out, I'd save up more money. Because frankly, you get what you pay for.

It depends what you think great is.. Not too be rude or anything but something I've noticed is everytime a "Lower" priced item is mentioned.. they seem to get bashed for some reason..? Like a squier electric.. when some one mentions that it makes those big wallets go..."UGH... Squier!!!??" But for people like me.. it's different..

Some may consider a $250 guitar to be a great guitar for "unexperienced players".. But me.. having a sports car, and rent to pay.. I can't afford a "GREAT" guitar.. over 800 bucks. I like my 200 dollar electric.. I've had it for almost 5 years!! And it's gotten me where I needed to go... there's nothing wrong with it. There will always be a better guitar out there.. but for some people.. they're lucky to get a cardboard box with strings and a hole in the middle!!

No offense taken I hope!!

Ask dirt_jumper if he wants to sell you his guitar. You won't do better than his guitar in a hardshell case for 450. he asked about selling it here .... You should see if he still wants to. It really is a great guitar.

Hrmm...

my natural recommendation is a Mitchell A/E. I have one of their acoustics, and maybe I just got lucky with it, but it's a beautiful piece...spruce top and mahogany back/sides and neck for only 200. The a/e is like $279.

For around $400, I'd prolly get an Ovation Celeb...but the one with the laser cut holes, not jsut the one big soundhole.

I'd also check out Ibanez's AE series. The AEG-10 and the AEF-18 are decent for the price.

Oh yeah... I guess it's a mater of personal preference... but I'd stay away from anything plastic.

Actually, I wasn't really advertizing it. I was just asking an opinion of wether to keep it or sell it. But if I were to sell it, I probably couldn't part with it for 450. It would have to be more like 500-550. Cuase it's got the new op30 electronics with full chormatic tuner and is practically brand new, and they sell new for 500 with the old op24 and no tuner and no case.

Zeal_of_God, I simply ment that if you spend 400 dollars on a guitar, you're going to get a $400 guitar. It's not going to sound like $600-$1000 guitar and if you are serious about playing and already have guitar, I'd reckomend saving for something that is going to help you progress. Becuase it is true that you are only as good as your gitar. Inexpensive guitars will play slower than expensive guitars, so you really don't want to keep buying cheapo guitars becuase you most likley are going to progress slower and that may lead to discouragement and then you may quit. Am I saying to go buy a taylor as a first or even second guitar? No just buy something you like.

that's not entirely true Adam.

A $400 guitar...when properly shopped for, should be enough to help anyone learn alot about guitar.

My $200 Mitchell, in the hands of a good guitarist will sound like a very good guitar. I know this because when I bought it, the sales rep. at Guitar Center played it first and it sounded excellent.

THe key is what you shop for, not necessarily how much you pay.

Yeah, there are exceptions. Your mitchel is one of them.

As far as making a cheap guitar SOUND good, you're right. But as those big guitarists progressed, they got new guitars that played better than their last guitar. What I meant was that more expensive guitars will be better as far as playability (speed, action etc). You could do it with a cheaper guitar, but it would be harder.

Yeah...gotcha

For example...Taylor's have a notoriously fast neck. I think I got lucky because my Mitchell has a fairly fast neck, I just need to get the bridge adjusted.
That's one reason I don't like Fender acoustics. I'm sure they make some good ones, but the ones I'm played have had good actions, but fat fat necks.

Let's be careful and not confuse the use of "cheap" for "inexpensive". There is a difference. And a person has to consider what he wants out of a particular guitar.

I first thoght I wanted to play a lifetime ago when I was in Jr High and got me a cheap electiric (I don't even remember the brand). I sold off everything when I graduated and went into the army. Some 17 years later, my interest sparked again. But I wanted to make sure it was more than a passing fancy. I got a decent Yamaha at a local pawn shop. Played it long enough to assure my self I really wanted to play. Moved from that to a $200 Sigma. I grew with that guitar and even started playing in church & light gigs. That's when I got my Martin. I don't forsee ever getting rid of it. But, I'm probably going to buy a cheap "beater" for about $75. I won't mind taking it to family reunions when it's 100 in the shade or playing in the X-mas parade when it's 40 & drizzling. Things I'll not do with my Martin.

I've already got my eye on one made by Samick. Plays good, projects and I think it'll be helped with a bone saddle & bridge. Lower the action a tad and you got an inexpensive player. I just know not to expect alot from it.

Music, especially to a guitar player, is probably the most poweful addiction there is. As if under the influence of the most addictive drug around, a guitar player can forget all that is around him. While he plays, the pressures of the job, or everyday life, just simply fade away.
