Initiate An Instant Replay For College Football
We now have the technology to correct human mistakes by referees,
many of which of been a deciding factor in many games. Instant replay is a way to correct human error mistakes by referees. With so much at stake in college football games, revenue, standings, and athletes hard work, we need
to make sure that we get the most accurate game called in our ability.
Instant replay would be easy to use.
What the referee does is, after the a disputable call on the field is made, a coach can challenge it by throwing his red flag onto the field for the referees to see. If he has any of his two challenges left or if it is a reviewable play then the referee will go review the play.
There are only some plays that are reviewable. And those are,
*Plays determined by the sideline, goal line, end zone, or end line.
*A pass ruled complete, incomplete, or intercepted in the field of play.
*Touching of a forward pass by an ineligible receiver or a defensive player.
*Whether a QB has fumbled or was throwing forward a pass.
*Illegal forward pass when the passer goes beyond the line of scrimmage or after a change of possession.
*A forward or backward pass thrown from behind the line of scrimmage.
*Player down by contact.
*Forward progress with regards to first downs.
*Touching of a kick.
*Number of players on the field.
If the play falls under one of those categories the referee will go to a black machine on the sideling which will have the replay of the previous play. There, using slow motion shots, different angles of the play, and fast forwarding and rewinding, he makes his call.
There are some good and bad things about instant replay, and here are the good.Over the years we've lost more and more referees to NFL making college football have less qualified referees. It will make the game more fair by having less wrong calls. It can make a big impact in the standings, one bad call can cost a team a game, one game can cost them their spot in the standings, no spot I the standings can means no bowl berth, no bowl berth means all the players hard work was wasted. Financial reasons are also a big factor. A conference get paid by having teams in their conference go to a bowl. One loss can stop that.
With the good there is also the bad.
There is the time factor. Many fear that getting instant replay will slow the already long game, and make it longer. Also that the coaches will abuse it.
Then there is the cost factor. It will cost each conference about $10,000.00
to get instant replay. Many think that is too much to spend. If you think about it though, they get money for sending teams to bowl games. They can get the money right back. Also most conferences can afford already anyways. Many think that we should not use something that is new and untested. But that is untrue. The NFL is in their second or third year with instant replay, and so far has worked great.
With the technology available there is no need not to get it. With so much at stake,
there is no reason for games to be lost because of human error. The many that oppose it, oppose because they are afraid of change, afraid of new technology.
But that shouldn't stop college football from changing for the better. |
