This is the background story of my poem "wall", which is in the poetry section. In our missions trip to Guatemala last march, we spent most of the time replacing an old wall with an earthquake-resistant wall. Tearing the old wall was easy: it only took us like a couple of hours. We basically spent the rest of the time building the new wall, and did not even get to complete it. To build a wall that could withstand an earthquake, we couldn't just stack up some bricks and call it a wall. First, we had to dig 2 feet under the ground and lay a foundation with cement. In the process, we couldn't believe how much junk we had dug out. They were ranging from a soda bottle to a shoe. I was talking with my youth pastor, and he mentioned how being a christian was just like that. We have to get rid of all the garbage in life and let Christ be our foundation, and growing in God is a slow and never-ending process, as we had to lay down one brick at a time. And we won't get to finish building our walls until Christ comes to take us home, because He is the One who will complete the work.
*I changed 3 feet to 2 feet, because I think it was 2 feet.
