Question Stupid team names

There are many teams in professional sports with stupid names (Nuggets, Athletics, Dodgers, White & Red Socks) but what about the extremely stupid ones that seemingly make no sense? What the heck is a "Brown" (Cleveland) or a "Red" (Cincinnati)? How did people come up with these names!?

My favorite name in sports was when I was in high school in Colorado, and we would go up to Ft. Collins to play the Ft. Collins Lambkins.

"Oh no, look out, the mighty Lambkins are leaping onto the field!"

As for names that make no sense, hmmm. How about the Utah Jazz? Yeah, there are a lot of great jazz musicians coming out of the Utah scene.

I think they were doing it sorta in honor of the old Texans team that used to exist (but became the KC Chiefs), but yeah it's not the most creative name in the world.

Well it might be a little better if it was the Texas Texas and not the Houston Texans.

They were in New Orleans and moved to Utah and never changed their name.

I like the Nebrakska Cornhuskers.......what's a Cornhusker.

Then the Green Wave....not intimidating.

Any team named the "ducks" (Oregon, Anaheim) is obviously not going for the intimidation in the name....now maybe the Oregon Rabid Ducks would be a good name....

But my favorite....Minnesota Golden Gophers!

And then there's the Mighty Progreso High School Fighting Red Ants in South Texas.

I saw that on their water tower as we were headed to Mexico for a mission trip. It said "Progreso, Home of the Fighting Red Ants" and had a huge ant with an army helmet on and a pair of boxing gloves in the old Notre Dame fighting pose. Funniest water tower I've ever seen. I was like, "wonder if the team across town is called the aardvarks . . ."

The team formerly known as the University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors, now known simply as the Hawaii Warriors. I also like the San Francisco 49ers (huh??), The San Antonio Spurs (yikes!), the Stanford Cardinals (their mascot is a tree), The Portland Trial Blazers, Seattle Supersonics, UTEP Miners, and, of course, the Syracuse Orangemen.

Yes, I knew that - but I would have changed my name going to Utah.

Something like...Utah Polygamists, or Utah Suburbans or Utah Moronis or Utah Tabernacles.

I read in a book about a team out of Polka, Ohio(I think) called the Polka Dots.

Maybe one of you other Texans can answer this for me. Why is the name Bulldog so popular down here? For example, our district has 6 teams in it, 3 are bulldogs! I mean I can understand Longhorns, Steers, Mustangs, etc. being popular in the Southwest, but Bulldogs?

LOL yeah. Those rainbow logos were SOOO pathetic. It's good that they got rid of those. hahaha It's hard to be scary when you have a freaking rainbow on your helment.

Basically miners who went to CA looking for gold in the gold rush of 1849 (hence the name).

Anyone know why New Orleans Saints are named the "saints"?
