Well, I can understand his wanting to be close to his parents, and family and stuff. He had to take several days off this year because of urgent family business in Tampa. There have been rumours as to whether or not the front office's unwillingness to increase the budget factored in, but I'm inclined to believe that they don't. He gave a really touching interview here a few days ago. Broke down and cried.
As for whether or not it's a good/bad thing for the team, that all depends on who they get as the next manager. But the Mariners were right to let him go. It's folly to force someone to stay who really doesn't want to stay. Their heart won't be in it, and it's a lose/lose all around.
I'd love to see Dusty Baker come in here...

Sucks for the Giants, but it would be awesome for the Mariners.
