Santa, or not??

for some reason i think i posted a thread on this a few weeks ago, but i never thought about it, or looked at it since then, and i haven't seen it, but anyway, during one of my classes today, after getting screamed at for being a realist and not an idealist, i brought up the point that i'm not going to trick my kids into believing in Santa Clause, when i become a parent... needless to say, i got screamed at about that for a while... so anyway, my question is what do you think about not telling your kids there is a santa claus? is it good, bad, whatever? i'm just curious if i'm the only one who is planning on being a "bad" parent...

I can't see myself doing the Santa thing with any future kids... just seems really pointless to me.

My parents never tried to tell me there was a Santa. We always celebrated Christmas as a birthday party for Jesus (when we were little anyway). My grandparents always tried to make me believe in santa, the easter bunny, tooth fairy, etc. and I remember thinking..."that is so stoooopid". I think its a harmless thing though. I am not going to tell my kids there is a santa.

I'm not going to try to force Santa on any kids that I will have. If they end up believing in Santa, I'm not going to talk them out of it. I don't think it's a real big deal. I never believed in Santa and I turned out alright.

we'll you're obviously not the only one. i don't plan on santa either. it's not the focus of the day so why confuse the kids later on when they learn that santa doesn't really exist? when they get old enough to understand i'll explain santa, the easter bunny, and other things, but only so they know what's out there and that they are only in the mind.

I plan on being a "bad parent" too. I don't really see the point in lying to your kids about something so stupid...

I'm sleepy.

They long for a fictitious fat man in a red suit?

I don't recall ever really believing in Santa, and look how normal I turned out...

Apparently. My parents thought me weird for thinking the Santa idea stupid. (they taught me it... I hated, then doubted at an early age, so they say )

Jay, that pic is absolutely hysterical! I almost spat on the screen when I laughed. You know that the magnetic North Pole is in Canada right - on Prince of Wales Island. I guess it's true that the Mounties "Always get their man". And here I thought that their motto was "Mantiens le Droit" - to keep the right.

"Santa Claus got shot dead by a Mountie,
Coming home fom my place Christmas Eve.
You may say there's no such thing as Santa,
But as for that old Mountie, he believes."

He didn't pay duty on all that loot he was carrying, and when they asked him to stop, he tried to run. I betcha that's what happened.

Santa or not?

I don't see any harm in my kids going along with belief in Santa Claus, it's fun for awhile. The main issue is that my girls are taught what Christmas really is about and that is reinforced by their books, videos, our prayer life with them, and the whole idea of gifts is not overly glorified. I guess whenthe question comes up, there's no point in pushing it, but until then, let's have fun.

My parents always felt that telling me there was a Santa Claus would just be leading me up to an emotional downfall when I learned there wasn't. They told me, my brother and sister that a long time ago there was a man named St. Nick, or Santa Claus, who made Christmas toys for children who couldn't afford presents. They said that now, we all get to be Santa Claus by giving presents to each other at Christmas. That is what I am going to tell my children someday. Then the allure of Santa Claus still exists and I don't have to lie to my kids.

I completely agree. My wife and I already talked about this and said that our kids will not be taught that Santa, the easter bunny or any of that is real. They take away the Glory that belongs to God.
