fretted violin

has anyone ever seen an afordable fretted violin. The least expensive on eI can find is $1,700

They're quite uncommon, hence I cant find an afordable version. Dominatly they are electric violins. The idea behind adding frets is to allow quick chord progressions for a trditional player, or you could tune the high strings down to standard guitar tuning and that would make an easy transition for a violin dumy like me.
I cant imagine trying to learn without frets. That would take forever, frets are kind of a 'shortcut'. Although you do loose a few major aspects of the violin, it does not bother me because I dont already play. And like I said you pick up soem good features of a guitar.

Im yet to find a violin with magnetic pickups too - maybe its better that way.

I've seen one in a shop, it looked quite alien to me

like, a fretted violin? that defeats the whole purpose!

but, if my memory is correct, i don't think it reached into the 4 number digits. and, it looked alright. (i didn't get a chance to play it...)
so anyways...about fretted violins - has anyone played one? and what does it feel like??? i'm very curious.

Those are crazily wierd-looking... the fretted ones have 6 strings! I don't know if they even really count as violins...

If you think taht is crazy look at the viper model on the same web site. It comes in a 7 string version too.

Not all the fretted ones are 6 string you can get 4 o 5 also. just that for guitar players they usually want 6 or 7. And you can get the 6 and 7 non-fretted. but they ar eall electric.

now he has a electric cello that you can wear, I sense more frets in the future....

Traditional violin it is not, but I think of it as a violin, again I am not a violin player. So just about anything you hold like that and use a bow - Ill call a violin.

OH MY GOSH! Those violins look so cool! I think I know what I'll be asking for this Christmas! (too bad we couldn't EAT for awhile if we bought one - $$$$$yikes!)

Go to samash.com and look there. i think they have a fretted 4 string stingray for around $800.
the cool thing with the frets is the amount of sustain you get. definitly a proper addition.

A friend gave me her old violin to learn on. Using a chromatic tuner and patience, I made my own fret marks on the fingerboard.

You could always buy a cheap non-fretted violin and use a fret charting program to map out where the frets should be, print it and use it to draw fretlines on the violin. That way you wouldnt lose the traditional violin sonority and still have a note/intonation reference to help you in your transition to a fretless instrument.

Ive never heard of a fretted violin :S
My violin has 3 bits of thin strip where you put your fingers on for E, F# and G on the D string.
You could make it yourself.
