Nice to see someone mention James LaBrie. He is an excellent singer but I am constantly seeing people put him down in favor of someone who growls or screams constantly.

I know I'm going to get ridiculed for this one, but...Mandy Moore. I don't like her music, but I think she sang "Only Hope" really well, and her voice is versatile as well. She was on this Broadway special on TV a couple of weeks ago and did fabulous, especially for singing a different genre than she usually sings.
Sarah Brightman
Sumi Jo (both opera singers)

I like really old people that didn't neccessarily have the greatest tone and technique, but had style and passion...

*Billie Holiday
*B.B. King - a guitar player, but a mighty fine singer too
*so many others!

Guys:
Josh Groban - I'm really not much for the music, but holy fazoli, his VOICE! And I'm not even much for male singers, but he is amazing.

Jon Foreman - I like his style, unique but awesome quality. Of course maybe I'm biased from him singing my two fav songs (Economy of Mercy and Let that be enough)

Shane Barnard - Great, smooth not too smooth, lots of soul but not too much, just great.

Paul McCartney - Maybe not the best quality, but you'll be hard pressed to find someone who get into the music and compliments it as well as he does, oh but then again...

Peter Frampton - see above.

David Tao - Singer/Writer/Composer/Producer he is huge in china, grew up in both new york and china so his american (not just "english") is perfect, fantastic singer.

Can't think of any more right now so moving on...

Girls:
Sarah Mclachlan - Ok so I'm incredibly picky with female singers and so I'll explain something right here. When you sing in the higher notes a lot of times there is a very slight difference between good singers and great singers. That difference is just a slight change of tone which changes it from sounding like you are yelling to sounding like you are singing. This exists in guy singers as well but guys usually sing different types of music and so it's not as much an issue. The key is simple voice control, it's harder, but rather than just squeezing it out, contrain those muscles to hit the note yet still have the inner part of your throat relaxed (thats the best way I can describe it) for a nice soft tone. I really don't know how to explain it, but Sarah is the best I've heard at doing this, and she has so much soul as well, what a beautiful voice.

Not to be bogus to the ladies or whatever, but because of this, I can't pick out other favorites. It's not as though nobody else can sing that well, there are many that have a few shining moments (Ginny Owens "If you want me to" is so good it's downright attractive), but it's just that most often times they simply dont. I don't know if it's because of laziness, or whether their voice trainers think it sounds "powerful" or what, but it's just not very common to see. To me it's the difference between very good and great, and if Sarah is the only one on the great side of things I cant help that, there are a lot of very good female singers but I feel she's the only one that really stands out from the crowd.

Eva Cassidy is the most incredible female singer I've ever heard.

Daniel Johns (Silverchair) has turned into quite an amazing singer, and his older stuff has a good sound too.

I like Eddie Vedder a lot.

My ultimate favorite is Thom Yorke

Is Kevin Max the one that sings with vibrato sometimes? If so, I meant to put him as one of mine. He's amazing.

I forgot two: Kevin Max, and Philip Quast (who played Javert in the Australian production of Les Miserables).

You should check out Eva Cassidy. Same basic laid-back style, way better voice.
