NASHVILLE, TN….9/6/02…inpop recording artist, and Campus Life reader’s favorite new group, Superchic[k] is set to launch their next release, Last One Picked, on October 8th with aggressive marketing and touring efforts.
Superchic[k]'s 2001 label debut, Karaoke Superstar, amassed piles of critical praise, topped R&R's Christian rock chart with "Barlow Girls," was nominated for two Dove awards for Rock Album and Rock Song of the Year, and landed nearly forty major TV/film placements, from Alias and The Practice to MTV’s The Real World and the feature film The Glass House. The group's upbeat anthem "One Girl Revolution" even scored the soundtrack and main credits sequence for Reese Witherspoon's 2001 hit Legally Blonde. Without question, this inspired midwestern pop group has penetrated the mainstream with a hope-filled, spiritually-centered message that's already been heard by tens of millions of people. Now Superchic[k[ is already dropping an astonishing new album, the poignantly titled Last One Picked.
"At some point, everyone knows what it's like to be the last one picked," says Tricia about the album title. " The new album addresses some heavy subjects, like a girl we met who won't eat lunch because her jeans don't fit anymore. She's worried because the world says she's not thin enough when the only person she really needs to please is God."
If Karaoke Superstar fashioned a home run sound, then Last One Picked hammers a grand slam right out the ballpark. Max, the group's creative mad scientist, produced the new album in a way that accentuates their diverse stylistic twists while shooting the sonic levels right off the charts. Likewise, the new songs offer more pointed commentary about the world's social snares while encouraging fans to seek and follow God's individual purpose for their lives.
Inpop is approaching this project with fervor and dedication, focusing their efforts around the key 13-18 year old demographic, one that Superchic[k] has been reaching in a solid and consistent way through their previous project, touring, and one on one time with fans.
“Superchic[k] has successfully blasted through a whirl-wind year of touring, promotions, and more, to record a sophomore record that is filled with incredible songs, soaked in the reality of pop culture”, comments inpop General Manager Steve Ford. “They examine issues that resonate with every kid in America – whether it is self image, relationships, suicide or the love of God: Weighty issues presented with a musical base that will permanently be imbedded in your mind. We are very privileged to partner with an artist like Superchic[k] – not only because they make amazingly fun music, but they have an incredible work ethic and a great impact.”
MUSIC:
Last One Picked invigorates with energized emotional anthems like "So Bright (Stand Up)," a guitar-driven call to remain surefooted against life's wicked winds, and "Hero," a life-giving lesson about how even small acts can reap huge rewards in a wounded person's life. The poetically-transparent "One and Lonely"- inspired by the inner-struggles of a girl the band met on tour - tackles the shaky insecurities in facing one's self-identity, while "Real" was written in direct response to a 12-year-old girl's letter describing the bitter pill of being young and unpopular. On the other end of the spectrum, the punk-inspired "High School" delivers biting narrative about adults who still think life is one big popularity contest.
Through all their musical growth, the group best spreads their artistic wings with the pain-drenched piano-ballad "We All Fall" that drips with empathy and compassion. Overall, Last One Picked champions not the victors, but those who seek and follow God's purpose, reminding us that success is a journey and not a destination.
"Karaoke Superstar told us that we don't have to compare ourselves to what's on television," says Max, "but now it's a matter of making that life knowledge stick as we continue getting ridiculed walking down our school halls. This new album is about that type of courage."
MARKETING/PUBLIC RELATIONS:
From the marketing side, inpop is gearing up for an aggressive advertising campaign via print and internet, and began a viral marketing campaign for 8 weeks launching late August.
Enhancing the marketing efforts are Veggie Tales and Delia’s department stores. Superchic[k] produced a remix of “The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything” song for the upcoming “Jonah Sing Along” DVD/video and the Jonah DVD which will be released spring 2003. Delia’s, a nationwide teen girls department store, has also started playing four Superchic[k] songs in their stores nationwide, something that the band loves, since the girls love shopping there, and Matt Daly, the band’s guitarist, used to work in one of their stores.
Campus Life launches a “Be a Superchick for a Day” promotion in September. The winner will be flown to a be with the band for a day while on the Thrive Tour with the Newsboys.
Radio efforts began on August 5thwith a one-week exclusive promotion for Air One Radio Network of the first radio single, “So Bright (Stand Up).” The single went for adds on R&R’s Christian Rock chart on August 15th, immediately garnering 14 adds, and thus making them the highest debut at #16. They also had six CHR stations add the single, indicating “So Bright (Stand Up)” may be their biggest hit since their #1 song “Barlow Girls.”
Publicity efforts are already underway with the November cover of CCM confirmed, as well as a Student Plan-It Devotional organizer with Group Publishing and fall POLLSTAR cover.
Following in the footsteps of Karaoke Superstars, Last One Picked will also receive a major effort toward film and television soundtrack placements. With nearly 40 placements from the previous recording in less than a year, the pursuit will be relentless.
RETAIL:
Last One Picked will have end cap positioning in 700 retail outlets as part of the “Thrive Tour” retail campaign.
INTERLINC
Interl’inc has always been an integral part of Superchic[k]’s mission, and will be even more so with the new project. The six month long campaign will include placing ads in August Interl’inc brochures, as well as their November “Youth Leaders Only” book. Their fall video loop will feature a brand new Superchic[k] video, boxed with an 11x17 poster.
TOURING:
Having hit Europe over the summer, Superchic[k] will blanket the states this fall on The Thrive Tour with Newsboys and ZOEgirl before making their Down Under debut in Australia and New Zealand this January. The tour will hit many major markets, and anticipations are high for a great, high energy show.
Flipping back a few calendars, Superchic[k] first started as a mere concept. While touring with another group, Max met a girl who rebelled against her school's petty political flow and yet still became Homecoming Queen by the average students' will. From this inspiration, Max formed Superchic[k] with the empowering message that kids will live grander lives if they seek God's will and follow their dreams outside the cruel "codes of cool." Moreover, the group wanted to show people what can be achieved simply by trying, which is why the band opts to produce and record their albums in Max's deep, dark basement.
With industry buzz overwhelming, Superchic[k] signed to Inpop Records in 2000, and morphed their eight-song self-release into Karaoke Superstar. Following their Inpop debut, their CD garnered fan approval at retail, and rave reviews and press from the Chicago Tribune, New York Times/Scholasatic magazine, Dallas Morning News, Billboard, R&R, CNN, Newsweek, Mary Kate & Ashley magazine and many others. The April 2002 issue of Campus Life also proclaimed Superchic[k] Best New Artist of the Year. They also spent 2000-2001 touring incessantly with such high profile outings as Festival Con Dios with Audio Adrenaline, Newsboys, and the O.C. Supertones.
